Did you go to the Smashing Pumpkins concert by chance on Saturday? Perhaps some inspiration?

I didn't go to see the Pumpkins. The inspiration came from seeing a few clips from the movie Hugo and then watching the original Melies.

Needed some therapy time yesterday and ended up making this Freddie Mercury statue out of wire, foil and clay:

With Halloween coming up I needed to do an appropriate project, and thus the Bride of Frankenstein! A styrofoam head, a couple of bags of feathers and some gauze along with paint. An afternoon of work and she's ready for display. Her boyfriend in the bottom photo was painted about two years ago, and he's stunned by her beauty. Spoilered for size:

Finished this beastie off last night - another ship in a bottle. This one's a gift for a client who did something very nice for my daughters and won't accept financial recompense. She said nothing about getting payment-in-kind, so she has to find some shelf space now:

That is a cool piece! Let me know if you ever want to do a hardwood base/stand. Ive always got small scraps around that would be perfect for this.

I will do that - hardwood scraps would be perfect! Plus you have more carpentry equipment and better woodworking skills.

Another basement creation. I had been looking at some old Star Trek concept art and got inspired. The Enterprise is a 1:2500 model, while the stuff around it is made of the usual stuff - styrofoam, foil and celluclay - along with some other assorted junk including an old Scotch tube and an old VHS spool. I included the pic that set my imagination in motion:

Lots of photos!

Thought I'd share, among other things I build stave snare drums. Wish I had complete ones on hand, but heres a bunch I have on the go right now.
Top left is a 13x7 maple. Will be a 8 lug pattern with diecast hoops, sharp double 45 bearing edges. 5/8" thick, its gonna have some crack to it. Bottom left is a 14x6.5 birdseye maple with purple heart strips. 10 lug pattern and will finish this one off with tube lugs and single flange hoops. Top right is a 13x7 oak, 8 lug pattern with triple flange hoops. Bottom right is a 14x8 bubinga shell. Will use small lugs and triple flange hoops, vintage style bearing edges and beds. This shell weighs about 13 pounds as it sits, its gonna be phat. Need to cut bearing edges and drill and add hardware yet, then finish.

This is a Tama walnut monoply (steambent) shell that I recut the bearing edges on, as well as touched up the snare beds.
Rounded double 45 with vintage style snare bed.

Woodshop time is very cathartic, just wish there was more time!

Mods can take this down if I'm breaking some rule, but I thought I might give this a little promotion:

It's a free event, and there's a lot of cool stuff on display made by some real talented folks. The museum is open during the show, and they fire up the engines on the Lancaster a few times during the day! It's a fun afternoon out of the city.

Are you showing any work at it?

I'm planning to. There's about five kits that I think deserve showing off.

I channeled Ray Harryhausen again - enter Medusa's Lair! Sculpey, craft moss and dollar store clay met and made this little display number. The clay actually worked out better than I hoped - since it's cheap, weak stuff it cracked when it dried, which made the scene even more derelict!

The display case is a jewelry box (or something) from Ikea which protects it from dust. Credit to Mrs Puppet for that suggestion.

Big photos beneath:

Finally finished my piano bench. Mortise and tenon joinery, built with a 3” high box to store the sheet music. Made it out of 4/4 and 8/4 cherry. Really happy with how it turned out.

Well, the Western Canadians are coming up this weekend in Nanton. I've decided on the pieces I'm taking for display. In addition to Medusa's Lair a few posts above, these make the trip:

(huge pictures follow)

Spoiler!

If anyone makes the trip, seek me out. I'll probably be wearing my usual uniform of UPEI hoodie and ratty-looking Brewers ballcap.
