Middle of nowhere, with vendors either offering junk iPhone cases, DVDs, or Bubble Tea. Also heard a rumor the leases per sq/ft is insanely high.
It's a beautiful space, but for something like that their marketing has been nothing sort of abysmal.

It's basically ebay in real life. Why not just have the cheap knock off Chinese junk delivered to my door?

$220 000? Wow. You have to sell a lot of iPhon chargers to make that back.

A Muji and a Uniqlo would be absolutely fantastic.

And Daiso.
I'm actually surprised that Miniso isn't already there.

I'm doubtful this concept is going to succeed. Maybe 20 years ago, it would be a nicer version of Crossroads Market selling junky electronics and trinkets. But these days I can't imagine they will have much on offer that you can't order on the internet. Being in the middle of nowhere means you have to have a compelling reason for people to go there. I'm not really sure what that reason is, but then I loath all malls so I'm not really their target.
|
If it were a bit more open-concept, it would probably be a decent place for some of the Symon's Valley Farmer's Market tenants to go until they're ready to re-open.
I don't think the concept is good either. This isn't China where you can make a living off of selling cheap trinkets and paying rent for your little space.
Really what this would be ideal for, if they designed it right, would be for small businesses like accountants / lawyers / whoever needs an small office space to operate out of .

Man, a laser tag or paint ball game in that ghost mall would be pretty sweet.

517 units? How was this ever going to work? What can 1 stall sell me that 30+ other stalls won't also have in stock?

They should turn this place into a gigantic, interactive Occulus Rift / VR gaming and technology centre.

Can it be converted into a field house or ski jumping facility?

The really cynical side of me might suggest the owners knew this was going to be a failure and it's some sort of money laundering scheme. I just can't see how anyone thought this would be a good idea in Balzac.

If it's really that sold out, management might not care how many stalls are open or think advertising is worth spending on. They would have got their money already...

What a stupid idea it was to build that mall. The world needs to have less places that sell cheap useless Chinese junk, not more. Glad the mall is a failure. Honestly, with the height and size of the building, they could easily remove all the stalls and flooring and turn it into an indoor field house. Could have a variety of sport courts in there.
