I was there. 2nd row just to the right of Dion during the 1st and 3rd periods.
Willi Plett immediately became my favorite player after sitting that close.
He was a mean, nasty and tough customer and a pretty good player. Just a real pain in the ass to play against.

thanks , so interesting
19 man rosters, and intriguing that the Flames only carried 20 instead of 23
some neat players on both sides, obviously the Flames names are well known- with a young Peplinski stepping right in there on the 3rd line- he would be there to see the cup hoisted less than a decade later
Quebec with the 2 HOFers Goulet and Stastny, a lot of famous WHA names, and soon to be Flame Jamie Hislop
I'm not sure I knew the Flames were affiliated with Rochester at that point, nor did I know (or recall) that Overtime was already being kicked around

so confused! I was wondering how you knew where Dion (the poster) was sitting, then I realized you meant Dion (The goalie)

I probably hadn't read this report for 30+ years myself, so I went back and checked. It looks like the Rochester thing was a temporary last minute loaner just for those guys and the primary affiliate that season was CHL-Birmingham.
Also, one thing that is misleading is the reference at the end to the Flames having to take extra long road trips that season because they were still in the Patrick Division with the Eastern teams. Actually, the league played a balanced schedule that season (4 games vs. each of the other 20 teams for a total of 80). Although the divisions technically existed, the standings were 1 thru 21 with the playoffs seeded 1-16, so it didn't really matter what division the Flames were in schedule-wise.
As a side note, I have these reports for every NHL game from 1961 thru 1991 and recently was doing a series of posts at another site about the 1967 expansion season. For an otherwise non-descript game at Chicago Stadium in December, there was a 1-line reference to "an engine fire broke out in the Zamboni between periods leading to a short delay at the start of the 3rd period."
A guy e-mailed me and I assume in all seriousness said "not to nit pick, but I was at that game and I remember seeing smoke and guys rushing out with extinguishers, but I don't believe there were any flames so I'm not sure it was actually a fire."
I asked him about the game and he had no recollection or anecdotes about Glenn Hall in goal, or Stan Mikita pestering the other team, or Bobby Hull's booming slapshot, but he knew enough to write to me with a correction about the malfunctioning zamboni. For some reason, that struck me funny.

I arrived in Calgary a year late but I did go to their 1st game of the 81-82 season, a rather boring 1-1 tie against Vancouver I think. I have to admit as a Boston fan at the time I lost interest in the Flames as they were terrible early on but after the Lanny trade that season I slowly became a fan and haven't looked back since.

Reading the paper for stats...that takes me back.
So much info squished into a confined space, and only once a day. No instant updates, no rumors, no bickering with other posters, no one calling for Geoff Wards head.
This post makes me appreciate CalgaryPuck that much more

Interesting to read that this game was also the NHL debut for Hall-of-Famer Peter Statsny and his brother Anton.

Those ticket prices though....damn! $10.50 for the best seat in the house while they were in Atlanta!

Ok, wait, what? There was no Overtime back then? I had no idea games that were tied after the third period were just considered Ties (do I have that correct?). When did the overtime rule come into place?
Also, roster limit. What season did the standard 20 man rosters officially take place? 83 or 84?

20 man rosters = 1982-1983
5 minute overtime = 1983-1984
