I will add to agree that Unforgiven is a great film. I forgot to mention that in my list of ones I'd caught.

Both great movies. Looking at the stories, Unforgiven is almost a mirror of The Outlaw Josey Wales.

The Wild Bunch and The Magnificent Seven (1960) are both westerns everyone needs to watch.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) is my favourite western by far. The characters, the story, the score, the everything, all amazing.

Is 3:10 to Yuma considered a western? That's one of my favourite movies in any genre

Surprised that The Searchers hasn't been mentioned yet. Great film.

And if you want to go all the way back to see the proper birth of the genre you should probably watch Stagecoach.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention the True Grit remake. The original has its charm, but the Coen Brothers absolutely nailed that movie.

I always found Unforgiven to be aesthetically similar to The Searchers. The use of color in the Eastwood film seems to pay homage to it.

I'll throw in Assassination of Jesse James and McCabe & Mrs Miller as a couple favorites.

OK, someone needs to help me with this. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly is obviously an entertaining and epic story that's fun to watch, but... what is its point, aside from a fairly superficial "greed = bad" theme throughout? Is there any actual substance there?

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The original Westworld sort of counts.

I believe that's about it, but I did a quick google and this came up.

Like many of his films, director Sergio Leone noted that the film is a satire of the western genre. He has noted the film's theme of emphasis on violence and the deconstruction of Old West romanticism.

adding to the list of movies to watch.
I am not a John Wayne fan at all, but I enjoyed Rio Bravo. Especially Dean Martin.

With baseball season getting underway, it's time to watch The Natural again:

"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" would be more aptly named as "The 3 rotten bastards".

I really liked The Sisters Brothers.

Unforgiven is probably my favorite western and would echo those recommending older Clint Eastwood westerns.

I think Open Range is an often overlooked western.

Agreed! Fantastic movie, and one of the best gun fights ever.

Agreed with all of this, especially regarding the opening and the score. The one-two punch of Frank and Morton as the two villians is one of my favorite villain contrasts, and Morton's theme in particular is just such a heartbreakingly beautiful motif. Literally gives me chills just having it run through my head.

Re watched Grease and it's still amazing, top 10 musical for me. John Travolta is just the man, especially during this time, and Olivia Newton John (RIP) is amazing in this as well. So many amazing timeless songs, it's a true classic.
