no - it's just white thread over white material - the thread has a different sheen than the 'flatter' material. the sheen also changes depending on the direction of the stitching. i use this 'effect' lots when setting up designs... i don't really have any good pics though.
ok... found this this pic. all the blue on the truck is the same colour of blue - the side panels, the door, the fender flares - all the same - just different direction of stitches. you can kind of see the same thing on the side walls of the tires. there is the black of the tires, but there are also the black knobby parts of the side tread - all the same black.
here's a better pic of under the front of the truck...
the front differential - all the same metallic thread
you can see the side walls of the tires better
you can see the leaf springs - this is all the same black, just using different stitch direction and style of stitches
