Default Trip to Poland

I will be having a free week in Warsaw poland next month. I was wondering if anyone has ever been there and could give any intresting ideas what to do? I will have lots of spare time and want to see as much as possible. Any good restraunts? tips? I have done a fair bit of research but I just wanted to see if CP had any suggestions.

As per my Polish fiancée:
For places to go, there's the new portion of Warsaw and the Old Town which is always pretty to walk through. You can find many restaurants in places like the Old Town Square where you can sit on a patio and enjoy some perogies and beer. There's lots of historical things to see such as:
  • Warsaw Rising Museum
  • The Copernicus Science Centre
  • National Museum of Warsaw
  • the Royal Castle
  • Gestapo Headquarters Museum

Yes, and don't forget your solar powered flashlight.

I was just looking at some flights to Eastern Europe this summer, some real steals to Warsaw. How safe is it there, for a large viking man travelling alone?

I have lots of Polish friends and they seem to all agree that they have some of the most amazing beaches ever.

Warsaw is about 200 Km from the coast. Unless you are talking about a beach on the river, you will have to take a significant trip to reach a beach.

The last paragraph is an interesting one:
Oliwa has also been involved in physical altercations outside the rink. In 2009, he used his fists to bring young Polish hockey players to order, after becoming fed up with noisy antics in a hotel room.
“I will not tolerate loutish behaviour from youngsters who have yet to make anything of their lives,” he explained

Further background on that same incident from 2009 here:
http://forums.internationalhockey.ne...er-WC-in-Torun

I am sure there is something lost in the translation, but still funny...Oliwa was a high ranking official of Polish Hockey.
According to Oliwa Kolusz started to fuss in hotel and had chip on Polish coach Peter Ekroth shoulder. So Oliwa hit him and Kolusz has broken nose now. Kolusz said he was only talking to his friends and suddenly Oliwa came, sprinkled him with whiskey and hit out of nowhere. Oliwa said he hit Kolusz because Kolusz "showed no respect to national team coach". Then Patryk Noworyta acted in defence and was left a little wasted.

Apparently this can be done as a day trip from Warsaw (it is in the Krakow metro) and was the highlight of my time in Poland:

It is amazing. Apart from that, drinking cheap polish beer/vodka and ogling beautiful Polish women is likely the best use of your time.

A good day trip from Warsaw is Lublin. Cool city itself and you can also visit the Majdanek concentration camp should you wish.

I was in Poland last spring, and I had a fantastic time.
Didn't spend a lot of time in Warsaw, but spent a day in the old town square. Lots to see there, the castle, some cool churches etc.

If you get a chance, I'd swing by Krakow. I spent a lot more time there and had a great time, there is a lot to see. If you can, you must head to the salt mine at wieliczka (which is near Krakow):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wieliczka_Salt_Mine

One of the coolest places I've ever seen.

Edit: Damn, beaten to it by Makarov

That's actually where I spent the majority of my trip, and it was a great little city. Not as cool as Krakow, but still quite nice.

Mejdanek was one of the worst places I've ever been in my entire life, but that's kind of the point. I'm gald I went, and I'd suggest anyone who's never been to a concentration camp go, but I will never go to one again!

having been born and raised in warsaw, here are some things i would suggest.

warsaw rising museum is a must.
lazienki gardens, especially on sundays when there are free chopin concerts by the chopin statue. either way, a beautiful park to spend a day in.
stare miasto (old town)
walking up and down the royal route - some great pubs/bars/restaurants
national museum
royal castle - nice background into the destruction of warsaw in world war 2 and how the city was rebuilt.
palace of culture and science - one of the great social realist buildings in the world
wilanow palace and the polish poster museum
if you're into architecture, plac konstytucji and plac zbawiciela has great social realist architecture.
warsaw ghetto, especially if the museum of polish jews is open by that point.
try to catch a legia warsaw soccer match if possible, some of the best fans in europe (safe as well, regardless of what the british media tell you)
the best kebab in the world (personal opinion but also that of many others i've talked to) on the corner of marszalkowska and swietokrzyska.

hope that helps. warsaw is a great city. underrated and takes a while to get to know but you won't be sorry you went.

would also add that as noted above, krakow is a truly wonderful city. if possible, i'd suggest 3-4 days in warsaw and 3-4 days in krakow. krakow has more traditional beauty as it wasn't touched in the war, whereas warsaw is much grittier but also cosmopolitan. other great places to visit would be gdansk or wroclaw.

also, if just staying in warsaw, i'd definitely suggest a day trip to zelazowa wola (chopin's birthplace) or kazimierz dolny.
