Jumping straight from TV host to a GM position seems like quite a leap, he must be pretty well respected.

He was on the Rink Shrinks podcast last fall. It was an interesting chat.

Weekes consistently has some of the worst hockey takes. It's interesting at all that he's being considered. But good for him if he lands it.

What about Mike Futa? Wasn't he slated to be the next new up and coming GM for a long time? King's didn't renew his contract in the off season and I see that he is now on Sportsnet. He doesn't have enough personality to be on TV. Please somebody hire him for a role in hockey ops.

Weekes interviewed for the Devils GM job as well (that Fitzgerald got).

Yes he was. His name was linked to many vacant GM jobs for a few years. Not sure why he's ended up on TV now.

This may be an instance where the NHL and clubs in general are widening their criteria and selection of candidates to include more diversity as well as different voices, which is a good thing.

I am not saying Kevin Weekes shouldn't be included in the conversation or that he can't bring any insight to the management level, it's just a very very rare move for something like this to happen. You normally don't move from a 1B/Backup goalie scenario to the top cat at one of the best run, consistent, most successful organizations and everything that entails.

Similar questions were also asked when Gretzky was hired as the coach of the Coyotes. It's a big step up and playing the game and coaching / managing in the game are different animals and it usually doesn't end with success for either party.

For what it worth, being a backup goalie is a good position to learn the game and prepare for some staff role (similarly to catcher in baseball).

Ohh I agree 100% that backup goalies and 4th line grinders can make some of of the best coaches and management types. They can pick up different things and deal with certain situations differently because of the work ethic and resolve they have had to endure.

I just think that in this case, it might be a massive step up and probably not in the best position to succeed for someone like Weekes. We will see though
