Default Flames make New York Times

I’ll take it. Some Gretzky but whatever.

That article was terribad, even for the failing new york times

TL;DR: Almost no one in China cares about hockey, gretzky has huge hands (in China) and hockey pucks are made from rubber

in some ways the chinese market is the golden goose for the NHL terms of tapping into a market that they have zero presence...

i've always wonder why the chinese lagged behind countries like South Korea or Japan in soccer? if SC and Japan can be reasonably successful at a high international level, there's no reason to believe that china couldn't be better than what currently demonstrates.

I agree with the article however, that the NHL requires a star of chinese descent to really bring more chinese to take an interest in the sport...until that happens there's no real reason for the chinese to follow the sport. The exhibition games are a kind of curio, not unlike the NFL games were in London when they first started.

but even if there is some interest, the time zone challenges make it pretty tough to become an avid follower of the sport... that's not something easily overcome no matter how many exhibition games you play in China

I wonder if the stragety is to get just one percent of a billion people to at least be interested in buying merch? Or actually becoming fans.

The Islanders drafted a Chinese born player named Andong Song (宋安东) in the 2015 draft, if this kid can developed into playing in the NH, they might have an easier chance selling the game in China.

interesting... did not know that.

but definitely helps to 'have one of your own' playing as one of the top players to bump ratings.

i am sure that this was the case when Villenueve was F1 champion for example, i know i tuned in more to watch F1 than previously... it will be the same with Alphonso Davies if he becomes a star with Bayern
