the NHLPA doesn't appeal it. they appeal on the players behalf.

big difference. the union doesn't get to pick and choose who they support. you're in the union you're entitled to their help.

Both 27 and 18 games are hefty. If the initial suspension was 18 games instead of 27, the initial reactions would have probably been the same. The same people who thought it was too lenient would still think it was too lenient, while I imagine the people who thought it was too much or beyond the scope of the NHL would still have the same opinion. Let's be honest; if you think that this is for the justice system to deal with, and not the NHL, going from 27 to 18 games doesn't make you happy . And if you think that domestic abusers have no place in the NHL, 27 games wasn't going to make you happy to begin with.

But now, the absolute number of games doesn't really matter, as much as the fact that it's now been reduced. This is seemingly as arbitrarily as the initial suspension.

I think the punishment for this type of situation needs to be explicitly laid out in advance. Perhaps even referenced in the new CBA? So that there is a mutual understanding of what players should expect when they do this. Of course, there are shades of grey as in any type of punishment, but a pre-emptive general guide might help.

And NHL comes out winning this mini PR battle against players union. Underlying chess match leading up to the lock out.

And herein lies the difficulty of sporting leagues trying to administer justice for off-ice events without 10 angles of instant replay, and without the scope of information collection that law enforcement can obtain.

This is an issue without a simple answer that won't go away.

Nashville Predators forward Austin Watson has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL and has been admitted into stage two of the league’s substance abuse and behavioural health program.
According to a statement released by the league, Watson’s suspension is “related exclusively to his ongoing issues with alcohol abuse.” The suspension is implemented immediately, and the 27-year-old will not be paid.
The Nashville Predators are saddened and disappointed for Austin Watson and his family as he enters the NHL / NHLPA Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program for alcohol-related treatment,” the Predators said in a statement. “We are grateful for the NHL and NHLPA’s program and will cooperate in any way necessary as we continue to support Austin and his family as they go through this difficult time.
“Because of the personal nature of the Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program and our exclusive focus on Austin and his family’s well-being, there will be no further comment on this matter.”
Watson was suspended the entire pre-season and 18 games earlier this season after pleading no contest to domestic abuse this summer.

Assuming this is true, definitely complicates the matter.

Is every crime NHL suspension worthy?

That's from October.

There was a quite a debate after it came out, but I think there's often a perception to disbelieve the woman in this case, rightly or wrongly.

It is how the program works. Stage 1 is the first treatment plan. If the player violates the terms of the program, they are moved to each subsequent stage.

Because he is now in Stage 2, that means he had a relapse or violated the rules of the program while in Stage 1.

If he does it again he will be suspended without pay for minimum of 6 months.

Why isn’t he put on disability? Don’t teams have insurance benefits? Can they actually penalize someone for having a disease?

Didn't Berglund just lose $12M because mental health issues prevented him from playing?

It definitely seems like the NHL could be doing more to help players with mental health problems.

I would agree but I wonder if he sought treatment. Maybe the team only found out after he released those recent comments.

I have to assume this is all above board as it isn’t the first instance. Maybe the team doesn’t handle disability benefits and it’s through the NHLPA or something.

I have literally zero knowledge of this but it's almost appears that the players are treated like independent contractors.
