Dubas' first real test with player management. Hope he has enough experience (or handlers) to deal with this.

Shanahan & Dubas are banking heavily on the "take-less-for-the-team-to-win" theory (along with the "defence-doesn't-have-to-be-that-great" theory).
They expect their big 3 to take a discount like Tavares did (reportedly left $3 mil per year on the table).
Reports and rumors run the gambit - Nylander insisting on Driesitel money, Matthews insisting on McDavid money (or Taveres money), Marner looking for a good season to push him into Dreisitel money.
Regardless, the Laffs will be paying close to $40 mil for their top 4 for years if they insist on keeping them.

I'm sure Tavares could have gotten cap max from someone but that doesn't really mean he signed for a discount.
He made himself the second highest paid player in the NHL. He's not the second best player.

We can thank Mulletville for some of the demands Toronto will be facing both this year and next. Unfortunately their idiocy probably also impacts the contract Tkachuk will get.

Adding Nylander would be pretty cool. But if he thinks they're gonna dole out more for him than Tkachuk (projected) or Gaudreau or Monahan, just not gonna fly.

According to press rumor SJ offered Taveres $13 mil over 7 years. Signing for $11 mil means he gave the Laffs a $2 mil per year discount. Taking less money than what is on the table = discount.

Next year is going to be interesting for the leafs....
assuming they can manage to get mathews in at $11M, marner at $7.5M, and bridge nylander at say $5M... Their cap situation looks like fun, in that they would be at a cap hit of ~$71.5M. Assuming the cap remains static, that leaves about $8M to sign:
4 x bottom6 forwards (plus a 13th forward)
3 x bottom3 defencemen (plus a 7th dman)
1 x backup goalie
the year after, they get relief off of Marleau's $6.5M, but unless they are able to move Marleau before then, next season should be a lot of fun.
I just don't understand why the leafs a) signed Marleau in the first place knowing they'd be in this spot, b) are so invested in the idea of signing Nylander after getting tavares, when they have the obvious need on defense
If I were dubas, i would have tried to use Nylander to pry out a young dman from elsewhere, and give that guy this money.
One could look at moving kadri but that contract is too damn good to move. The guy is a 30 goal scoring C that plays the 2nd/3rd line C spot. Not to mention, he's got an edge to him, which is another thing this leafs team is completely missing throughout the lineup.
Let the talking heads keep planning the parade down Yonge St though

This is exactly what a discount is. Your second sentence doesn't mean anything. A discount is taking less than he could have got, not ranking himself amongst his peers in terms of production and assigning himself a relative salary.
Where do you come up with some of this stuff?

Ottawa and leafs would never deal but EK for nylander makes a lot of sense for both.

Giving up Nylander for one year of Karlsson doesn't really make sense for the Leafs.
If the Leafs are trading Nylander I'm thinking they want a player of similar age.
There's no way they could sign Karlsson after the one year so that would be a pretty big waste of an asset like Nylander.

Giving a discount, is taking less than a max offer.
If the Leafs max offer was $11 million, he didn't give them a discount, no matter what other teams are offering. He took the Leafs for everything they were willing and able to offer him, no discount.

So, a discount is when a team offers $12m and the player says “ no, just give me $10 m instead”, LOL.
So, no player has ever taken a discount.
JSYK, you are likely the only person in the world who would view it this way.

Let's say you you want to sell your car, it's worth $15,000, but you want $20,000. Your best friend offers you $20,000, and the person you hate most in your life offers you $30,000.
You sell it to your best friend, cause eff that other guy.
You didn't give your friend a discount, he still over paid in the end.
This is what Tavares did to the Leafs.

But you did take less money. So maybe it's not a discount but it's leaving money on the table you could have had.
It was well-known that if the Sharks got Tavares Thornton would have signed for a lot less, probably 1 million a year. So by your logic the Sharks get Tavares and offer Thornton 1 million for a one year contract. They say we can't go above 1 million. Thornton signs the 1 million contract but this is not a discount because the Sharks said the most they could offer is 1 million and Thornton signed the max they could offer. Sure, Thornton could have gotten 6 million elsewhere but he signed the max with SJ.
