Tough start for Mason McDonald against the Wichita Thunder.

Wichita scores 3 in the first period on 9 shots. First two look painfully similar with a rebound coming out in dangerous territory and the Thunder being in position to bury it on the open net. The same forward that scored the 2nd goal scores the 3rd soon after and McDonald is visibly frustrated by it. Mavericks only get 3 shots on goal the whole period despite being on the power play twice. They did have a couple shots off the post but regardless the first period was definitely all Thunder.

Better all around period for the Mavericks through the second however, Wichita still gets another goal off a broken play that had Mason McDonald on top of the puck and a Wichita player practically flipping over the crease and finding the back of the net. They look better on the rush and their power play was a lot more productive. Hunter Smith has gotten at least 3 scoring chances in this game and has had really good positioning deep in the zone.

Third period was very quiet until Dan Correale got a short handed breakaway and got the only tally for the Mavericks tonight. Shortly after, the Thunder answer back and the Mavericks do what they can but basically roll over. This game seemed over once that third goal went in and the announcers referred to them as "disorganized" and "gassed." Tonight was game 7 against the Thunder this season so far and you can tell that Wichita has the better scouting report. They take advantage in holes in positioning and don't allow much zone time at all. There needs to be a lot of tweaks for the Mavericks to make in the next 24 hours if they hope to have a better showing tomorrow night for their 8th matchup. Shots ended 22-14 for Wichita

The Mavericks came back for blood for their second game of their double header against Wichita. They face the same goalie as last night but blow 4 goals past him before he is relieved. They win 7-4 with 2 goals from Eric Freschi (as well as 3 assists) with the addition of goals from Bryce Aneloski, Greg Betzold, Matt Robertson, Justin Breton and Mark Cooper.

This game obviously had a lot more spark. Multiple fighting majors were dealt in the first period and a few occasional roughing penalties were found in the later periods. Both teams were almost equally as guilty as KC put up 29 penalty minutes to Wichita's 25.

Mason McDonald was able to keep his cool a little better even after Wichita scored the opening goal just lest than 2 minutes in. On top of that it was short handed. He was able to stay within his game and made 29 saves.

A story that carried with the team for tonights game was the fact they only found their selves with 4 defensemen after nagging and apparently new injuries. Hopefully these guys can take their few days off for the holiday break to rest up and carry the momentum from this game onto their next one on the 27th against the Tulsa Oilers.

Looks like they've brought him to Calgary after Christmas. Likely getting looked at by the team doctors...

Mavericks beat the Tulsa Oilers 4-3. Including tonight's game, they will play 4 straight against them. Matt Roberston had two goals tonight and is really proving that he is a production player that was missed in the lineup. He scored the first and the last goal and really showed how much of a clutch player he is. He has 7 points in the last 4 games he's played since rejoining the team from injury.

Both teams were goal for goal in the first two periods but the Mavericks came out with more fight in the third to be able to take home the win. The other two goals came from Troy Donnay and Dan Correale. They seemed pretty evenly matched for the most part and goaltending ended up being the difference maker in this one.

Shots finished 42-34 in favour of the Oilers. This is the 2nd most shots the Mavericks have faced in a single game this season, making it a huge win for Mason McDonald. Robertson was awarded the first star and McDonald was given the 2nd star.

They will see the Oilers again on Saturday December 29 at 6:05 pm MT

Couldn't really cover this game so here's the quick rundown. Mavericks play the Tulsa Oilers for the 2nd of 4 in a row. They win 3-1 with goals from Jared VanWormer, Bryce Aneloski and Matt Robertson. All had assists by different players giving 9 Mavericks players a point on tonights competition.

Matt Robertson has now scored the last two game wining goals and the Mavericks have a 9 game winning streak against Tulsa moving forward. This game also continues a 3 game winning streak going into their next game on New Years Eve back on home ice. Mason McDonald stopped 30 shots and has brought his record up to 8-7-0-1 on the year. Both teams were even at 10 penalty minutes. The Mavs were outshot but definitely held the upper hand in this game for its entirety.

The streaks has come to an end as Kansas City falls 4-1 to Tulsa today. Kent Patterson made his debut in net and stopped 36/40 Oiler shots. Mark Cooper was the only Maverick to make it on the board.

In the third period, Hunter Smith was down face first on the ice after a hit and needed attention from the athletic trainer. He ended up leaving and not returning to the game. There are not any new updates at this time. So we will see if he returns to play tomorrow.

With the recent Prout trade with Calgary and the loss of Eddie Lack there is speculation that Tyler Parsons will join Stockton once healthy. Until then we may see some shifting with Mason McDonald moving up at some point. Tyler Parsons is rumoured to be ready to play within the next week or two.

Mavericks play again tomorrow night at home for a New Year's special game against you guessed it, the Tulsa Oilers.

What Flames property remains in KC? Just Hunter Smith and Mason McDonald?

Kansas City faced off against the Kalamazoo Wings tonight. This is the first game against these guys since that goalie fight that Mason McDonald found himself in as well as 90 other minutes of penalties throughout that other game.

Mason McDonald gets the start in net. Chris Nell is their only other goalie option at the moment as he was assigned to KC this afternoon after the Parsons call up.

They own the first period finishing it 2-0. Greg Betzold scores within 3 minutes of puck drop and Matt Robertson gets the second halfway through. Both teams take a penalty and the Wings do not seem to get up on the rush and in the offensive zones as much as the Mavs. Shots finish 14-8 for the Mavericks.

The second played quite similarly to the first. Mavericks owned most of it and put up 2 more goals by Troy Donnay and Jordan Kwas. Kwas gets 2 points on the night with an assist on Donnay's goal. The Wings put up 1 to answer to the Mavericks 3 then the Mavs show they are still fully in control of the game. Matt Robertson came within inches of goal number 2. Nice to see him continuing to buzz as if he never missed any time due to injury. The Mavericks still controlled the shots at the end of this one 26-11.

The Mavericks keep the hold over the Wings until the last 10 seconds where a weak play gets the Wings their 2nd goal but comes way too late. Final score 4-2. Shots end 35-29. They will face the Quad City Mallards tomorrow night for another home game.

Hunter Smith (upper body) and Justin Breton (lower body) have both been placed on IR. Only healthy flames prospect in KC now is Mason McDonald.

One of my colleagues in Kansas City wrote an awesome feature on Mason McDonald.
He talks about his goalie fight and his experiences at the World Juniors.
It's a good read! http://thesinbin.net/the-last-line/

With Mike McMurtry being sent to Stockton, Matt Robertson will replace him on the ECHL All-Star team.

The Mavericks have suspended forward Dan Correale after he made it known to them that he would be pursing an opportunity in Europe. He had 6 goals and 9 assists on the season and had racked up 23 penalty minutes. This is a tough blow to the Mavs as he was a top winger and was known for putting his body in front of a lot of pucks. With other lingering injuries throughout the team, this is not news fans or the team wanted to hear.
