Is it worth it for teams to travel to Fredericton to possibly lose one match and go home? This actually sounds terrible.

Works pretty well for the NCAA.
Plus they get paid just to show up and then every win is cash in their pocket to they aren't out any money.
"Each team will receive $5,000 for travel and accommodation and can earn more with each win.
First-round Win: $3,000
Quarterfinal Win: $6,000
Semifinal Win: $12,000
Final Win: $24,000"

“Top 12 team by revamped World Curling Team Ranking System”. This will be interesting, they should’ve just made it an invitational. So many players have switched teams there’s no way any sort of ranking system would have any merit.

Still, advantage for Eastern teams. How much is a flight from Calgary to Fredericton? Unless there is an event near there before that.

Watched some of the games, yes it will take a while to get use to the new teams especially on the Mens side with Mcewen, Carruthers, Dunstone, Epping squads all changed up. The most interesting on the women's side is the Miskew, Homan and Fleury chemistry.
One thing they did different here was no extra end. If it was tied after 10, it was a draw to the button to determine the winner. However each skip had to throw a different turn, and the team who would have had hammer for the extra end gets to decide first what turn their team is throwing. The was a women's 1/4 final decided this way and Rachel Homan had to draw the button with an in turn forcing her to use the side of the sheet which hadn't seen any action for 1/2 hour or so. The rock didn't make the house and they were not too happy about the rule...

I tried to watch a few of the women's games. I kind of wish they would've had this later in the season as you can see that some teams are still coming together. This offseason of massive shake ups could make for some great curling come the Scotties/Brier

This is a few weeks old but Tim Hortons is out as title sponsor of the Brier after this year. Will be interesting to see who steps up.

Hopefully not Rogers or Scotiabank… they seem to be buying up all the naming rights.

I feel as though Candian Tire would be the perfect fit for the Brier.

Interesting history of the Brier sponsorship (from Wikipedia):
Quote:
For the first fifty years, the Brier was sponsored by Macdonald Tobacco (later RJR Tobacco Company and now part of JTI-Macdonald Corporation). The name "Brier", in fact, came from a brand of tobacco being manufactured by Macdonald at the time (a brier being a small shrub whose roots are commonly used to make tobacco pipes). Macdonald was also responsible for introducing both the Brier Tankard trophy (originally named the British Consols Trophy after a brand of cigarettes), and the now famous heart-shaped patches awarded to the tournament winners. The patches were modeled after a small tin heart pressed into the centre of Macdonald tobacco plugs, along with the slogan The Heart of the Tobacco. The same heart appeared on tins of Macdonald pipe tobacco. Later, when other national championships were developed, many took the heart as their identifying symbol as well.
Brier sponsors by year:- 19271979 | Macdonald Tobacco
- 19802000 | Labatt
- 20012004 | Nokia
- 20052023 | Tim Hortons
|
I'm of the vintage where I still think of it as the Labatt Brier.
I didn't realize its history with Macdonald Tobacco went back so far, or how many of the traditions are directly tied to that sponsorship.

It’s Scotties season once again. Scary moment when the Ontario player fell - she is pregnant - but it looks like she was able to avoid landing on her stomach.
Also, Joanne Courtney is incredibly uninteresting to listen to. And Vic is well past his prime. I miss Cheryl Bernard.

I just miss curling coverage. ESPN and Curling Canada didn't come to an agreement on the US broadcast rights. I have seen reported that CC asked for the same rights fees as last year and ESPN was not interested. ESPN3 and ESPN+ carry every sport imaginable. Cornhole, jai alai.. but no curling.
So no US coverage of the Scotties and as of now, not the Brier either.
