Also, I like Han and dislike how over the top negative he is on Huberdeau so it's either an opportunity for me to check myself or for these guys to challenge Han on some of his assumptions.
Nope!
Russic starts it off cryptically and awkwardly saying the first sentence of the article is a little aggressive, isn't it??? Wait, what is the first line? Does the listener know? Negative. Han starts off on the defensive but I'm not even sure what he's defending. Ok, bad start... They can get it back though right?
Nope!
Russic drives things off the rails by using this as an opportunity to jump on an anti stat soap box, but Han isn't really a stat honk like a JFresh. He focuses on player styles and skills. Han is now evidently annoyed at the line of questioning, thinking he was on to talk Flames or Huberdeau. He's still on though so we can salvage this right?
Nope!
They just end the interview 5 minutes in! It seems Russic was annoyed that Han didn't follow him off the deep end on expected goals for and just packed it in.
I can think of a hundred lines of questions based on his article:
https://jhanhky.substack.com/p/whats...with-huberdeau
1. You wrote an article similar to this in the offseason and this seems to confirm what you were saying. However, do you think the jump in Huberdeau's defensive analytics suggests he's going through a transition that could eventually yield fewer points but a better overall player?
2. You say that Calgary is coached to be defense first and cited your surprise that Gaudreau responded so well offensively to Sutter. If you look at the difference between last year's flames and this year's, do you think it could be a misconception that Sutter is strictly a defensive coach but the team may just lack consistency of execution this year?
3. In your article, you site linemates as a reason JH has had success in Florida, do you see a combination that exists on the flames that could yield a better result than what has happened so far? Obviously Lucic didn't help...
4. As an elite 3 on 3 player, what do you see going on this year? Is it possible that his ineptitude in this regard this year points to a player feeling the pressure of a new market and maybe that can be extrapolated to the rest of his game or is this another systems thing?
Instead we got an awkward ending followed by several minutes of Russic complaining about stats. Even that argument in a vaccuum is already annoyingly flawed because he wants things like expected goals for to be tracked by the league to remove bias, but it would just be tracked in buildings from 32 sources like shots and hits. Way more biased than from a single source like natural stat trick. I would say the NHL, at this point, has almost no credibility as an unbiased source of anything as the total revenue whores that they evidently are.

Thanks for the update. I love Han & Rusic, can’t wait to give it a listen.

Hopefully he takes his own show to bridge the noon hour and flames talk
(what's filling those hours again? I fall asleep every time I tune in between 1 and 4)

The slow death of AM radio is sad. Just let it die already.

On my first program, I plan on sharing a bit of a manifesto of what my plans are for my new show, but here it is in a nutshell. We will be on top of the Flames and the NHL, we are going to talk about the other teams in our area, but most importantly we are going to talk to the movers and shakers in Calgary. You can expect to hear some familiar voices and I hope to develop some new ones. At the core, it’s a Calgary show that I want you to listen to for information, not affirmation. I will always try my best to give you facts, and of course, you will get my opinions, but they are not necessarily the same thing.
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we will be LIVE from 1-3 pm MT and available on your favorite podcast platforms so you can listen when and where you want. (Note: First show because of the long weekend will be on a Tuesday)

Click on the link Jiri:
JALD is the middle name of my Father, Mother, Sister, and me. It was the name of my Dad’s company for 20+ years and JALD SE is an homage to him.

Other than the broadcasting of the actual games and maybe the fact that there's budget for a few guests on the 960 shows, what actually do they provide listeners with anymore now that all their former key talent is on the nation network?
As a listener I moved to podcasts awhile ago, but would listen to the 960 morning show in podcast form in the morning on an hour delay. Now I just listen to barnburner and go from there.

Boomer, Rhett and Pinder had a morning show that worked, probably because of its spontaneous sidetracks, constant chirping and such, not always solid sports sports sports.
I miss that show but glad to see them now on YouTube. Only listen to The Fan for flames games.

BTW, caught a bit of Loubo on the 960 morning show today talking about what happened when Sportsnet sacked him, and what it was like from calling the Olympics in 2010 to having zero confidence in himself, and what it took to get some of that back.
While he was never by fav PBP guy, many of us can relate to having a new boss come in and say you suck at your job (it happened to me in 2014) and how it leads to a dark place.
Anyway, I appreciated his story.

He's sharing a "manifesto". That seems kind of grandiose for a one person podcast but in any case, I hope he does alright with it. Seems like a good guy.

Really good man. I worked with him on a project to get some youngsters on skates for the first time. He's got a massive heart on top of being well-spoken. Wishing him all the best.
