Players' Tribune: Sedins will retire in Vancouver (eventually)
"If we are going to win a Stanley Cup, if we are going to achieve our dream, we’d only want it to be in Vancouver." - DANIEL SEDIN

I wonder if Iggy will feel the same way...find out on September 12? :P

Player's Tribune – "Dear Vancouver" – Daniel and Henrik Sedin

It is a really good read, but I could not resist:

Although I hate that Organisation, the sports fan in me is happy to see that some players really do love the team they play for.

When you are approaching 37-years-old after nearly twenty years in the NHL, this is an understandable decision. Some things are more important than championships.

Nice shout-out to Anson Carter in that article too. Always liked him...especially for that magnified World Championship goal...

I certainly detest the Canucks.
But I really, really, really, respect the Sedins. Stand up human beings.

That was a fantastic article. I've never been a Sedin fan, but that article sure makes me like them a lot more. It is great to hear players say the things they did, especially in light of the mercenary nature many players have adopted in their chase for the cup. I wish them well, but I hope they finish about 25th in the league this year, one spot better than the Oilers.

Spot on. I always hated how they could cycle around the Flames and seemingly score at will. But you'll be hard pressed to find 2 classier players in the NHL at any given time.
I always hated what they did to us. But I'll always respected their skill, chemistry, uniqueness.

They were magic together. That was some crazy chemistry, certainly among the best I've ever seen in hockey.

It'd be almost impossible for the Canucks to trade them, since they are a package deal. Sedins are smart and realize that Vancouver is their only chance to play together.

That's a very good read. Every once in awhile I'm reminded by something like this that it really is 'just' a game, and in the end there are more important things.
I don't like the Canucks at all, but I wouldn't be ashamed to have a beer with the Sedins.

I liked him too.
Was it still under Burke when he made astronomical salary demands and was told to essentially pound sand, subsequently falling off the face of the earth?

Considering the Sedins have no-move clauses, it sounds like they won't consent to any trade, which really binds Vancouver's hands if they are looking to continue the rebuild. That leaves two options after this year -- they either sign a cheapish deal to stay in Vancouver, or they retire and/or go back to Sweden. Either way, the Canucks aren't getting any draft picks/assets out of them.

No, but I think fans often get too unrealistically ambitious when it comes to expiring UFA contracts. For various reasons not all of them—nor even most of them—will be moved for picks and other assets.

The Sedins are fantastic people and the NHL is far better off for having them. As is the community of Vancouver. Their only flaw is being Canucks.
I for one, love players that remain loyal to a team and want to play in one city for their entire career. This narrative that anyone who wants that 'doesn't want to win' is ridiculous. Every player wants to win. But loyalty, and commitment to a community, count too.
Good on them. And good article.
