Except this time, there is no room on the back end for the Flames to steal a guy from the Oil. That said, Franson to the Hawks would be cool to see.

Foot speed is a bit of an issue, but he's one of the most proven #5D in the league and pretty effective on the power play/offense in general. Also has good penalty kill metrics and possession numbers. Gets a bad rap because he makes some of those visually poor mistakes. The Oilers could do a lot worse. I mean Franson would be their fourth best defenseman.

"One of the most proven #5 dmen in the league"? What does that even mean?
One of the best players who aren't good enough for top 4?

I'm OK with it so long as they hugely overpay, preferably with a long crippling term.

His agent already specifically said that the Canucks aren't in the mix. Whether that is negotiation tactics or not...

Man, if some other team actually signed Wideman and didn't see any shade of the "Wideman Effect" I would be so mad.

Yet still strangely happy for Wideman.
That incident - whatever it was - killed his career

Edit - yeah I know his crap play killed his career too, but that incident marked such a drastic drop

Seriously though...can the Oilers 'win' the sweepstakes and not sign him to a multi-year deal? With multiple suitors. ..Won't Franson insist on multi-year? I agree, 4x4 it up!

This sentence is infinitely better if that's his nickname.

Just about anyone available at this point would still be an upgrade for the Oilers D core.....hope the Hawks see some value in this guy and price him out of Edmonton.

I doubt either club will sign him to a "multi year" deal. 2 is "multi" i suppose but that would be max anyone gives him IMO.

As for who it could be, the Oilers have WAY more cap space this year, so I would suspect they have the inside track there.
