Default Dreger: Still sizable gap between Bennett and Flames

With a threat to play in Europe without a deal:

I say good riddance and go to Europe. I don't know what this kid has accomplished to display such arrogance. I thought his contract would be easy because of how poorly he played last season. I'm really souring on the kid now.

Maybe the big problem is that he doesn't want to play as a #3 Centre but wants a Top 6 winger scoring role with PP time.

Sounds like an Agent leak to start the posturing.

I wouldn't describe the 21 year olds sophomore season as a "poor" season.

I also think this is a bunch of nothing.

Take a deep breath everybody ...

The kid is 21 and listening to the advice of his agent. Nothing has been said in the media to suggest he's arrogant or full of himself.

Last year we heard rumblings of Gaudreau pressing his agent to get a deal done, and I'm sure the last thing Bennett wants is a protracted contract issue. I think this is what you get when you have a club with a confident GM that is willing to wait out agents to get a deal that fits with his salary structure.

Others have found he won't bend in the past, Bennett's agent will see the same as well.

Just posturing if there's any truth to this at all.

Treliving has established himself as a tough but fair negotiator. He won't overpay for an RFA (See: Gaudreau, Monahan, et al), but he'll give them around their market value. Bennett's agent should probably take a short bridge deal that's bonus laden so that Bennett can prove his value. The question is whether or not that's being offered.

Normally, I can understand why players with a lot of negotiating power hold out, but this one seems ill-advised to me. He's young, he's got potential, but he hasn't earned a big deal....yet.

Take the contract that's offered, Sam. You're unlikely to get a much better deal.

I had no problem with what Gaudreau was doing. That's the difference. Gaudreau deserved every penny and probably more.

What has Sam Bennett done? Nothing. That's the difference. It IS arrogance. There's a very fine line between being passionate and being arrogant.

Or, it's just an agent doing what he's paid to do.

You have absolutely no idea what contracts have been offered/asked for. "It IS arrogance" is an overreaction.

If this were a simple 2 year deal, it'd be done as there are a lot of comparable contracts out there. This type of news leads me to think they're negotiating a deal with some term, and are in tough as they go back and forth for what those extra years will cost. Treliving is likely trying to lock in a longer term at a sweetheart rate.

Bennett's agent is most likely trying to every penny he can outta Treliving, but unlike the GM up north, he knows how to manage his cap and pays according to players performance.
I'm still confident Bennett will be signed before the season starts.

don't see how a Dreger comment can lead you to believe Sam Bennett is an arrogant so and so.

all it seems to be is a nothing comment in the contract dance.

I doubt Bennett is even involved in the negotiations at this point. that's why these guys have agents.

not a big deal.

Wow. Immediately cast all blame on the player and for what reason? All anyone has to work with here is a rumor released by an insider starved for hits.

Seems like his agent is getting desperate and trying a Hail Mary to get the fans riled up to put pressure on the club to cave. No doubt that Bennett has to be looking at some recent RFA contracts and want a piece, but come on man... put up some numbers first.

As a side note: heard from what I consider a reliable source that Bennett's agent is after Frolik/Brodie money.
