Icon55 Sabres sign Lehner (1 year, $4M AAV)

@BuffaloSabres

The Sabres have agreed to terms with goaltender Robin Lehner on a one-year deal.

$4M???

What am I missing? Why would they give the guy a 1-year $4M contract?

So he would play professional hockey for their team. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Of all goalies who played at least half of their team games, he was just behind Price's 0.923 with a 0.920 save percentage. Good for 7th in the league. A decent show me contract based on a good season. I don't mind it.

Still it's odd to see a one year deal for this kind of money. Usually you see at least two seasons.

Exactly! Because if its a bargain you'd want more of it and if its a disaster you wouldnt offer this much money in the first place.

Odd.

Lehner's .920 save percentage is smoke and mirrors.

His numbers were padded because he faced a much higher amount of low danger shots than his peers.

He's young, so maybe he improves, but at this point he's quite overrated due to people seeing the 0.920 overall save % and not looking deeper into it.

Going rate for a passable starting goalie?

I believe Chad Johnson's save % was also inflated when he played in Buffalo.

Bit of an odd contract. Low risk though.

I mean, he's definitely the best remaining feasible option to play net for us this coming season. But he might not be the best option going forward, unless he proves it with more consistent winning and leading this team to the playoffs. We'll see how it goes.

It's the same contract Ramo got a couple years ago. Not odd, it's a show me with good money to avoid arbitration.
