Impressed! His game other than his serve is already better than one trick Raonic. I can see him being the #1 Canadian within a year.

Just don't hit the chair umpire with those celebratory balls, Denis.

Alright, everyone can start dreaming of a Thiem - Shapovalov final... All the forehands. All of them.

Everytime those commentators mentioned about how poised and composed he was during the match, which was about 140 times, i just thought of the wicked forehand to the umps head.

Great win

Now we need to see if he's able to bring it. It's one thing to get up for the big matches but the elite are able to take care of the lower profile ones as well

Interestingly enough he next plays the man he was playing when the infamous incident happened. If he plays like he did tonight against Edmund next, might be Edmund launching a ball at the ump in frustration.

In retrospect, maybe not getting a wild card was a blessing in disguise, Denis was able to quickly acclimate to the conditions at Flushing Meadows with those three extra matches and looks very comfortable on court.

He's avenged him once already. I forget where

Solid win for Denis! Just took it to Tsonga even when there was trouble brewing in the 3rd set.

The US commentators made that point a few times. Calling it a character builder and maybe helped avoid an obvious letdown.

That was fun to watch.

Lol all I meant was sometimes it takes these young talents before they "get it". Federer used to smash his raquet all the time when he was younger and after going out in Wimbledon in the first round for 2 years in a row I'm sure the sports writers at the time were calling him a choker after. If you went back to 2000 and told everyone Federer would become the greatest ever they would have laughed at you. Clearly we know how Fed turned out, I'm not comparing Kyrgios to Federer in 2017 but to 2000's Federer. We don't know how Kyrgios will turn out yet its still too early. He can give you brilliance at times but he can give you first round exit at times as well. Also Novak used to always retire in matches and all his peers hated him. Federer fought with him and hated him (probably still does) and Roddick wanted to physically fight him in the locker room. Novak was so cocky, when he retired in a match at the French Open against Nadal when he was was down 2 sets to love, he told the press he had Nadal right where he wanted him and when the press told Nadal what Novak said Nadal thought it was mistranslated he was so confused. Would you have guessed that he would turn it around and hold all 4 majors at the same time and win 12 majors so far in his career? I'm not holding my breathe but its far too early to write him off completely.
Anywhoo great win by Shap stick has a real chance to go far only real land mine is Cilic or Querry IMO

these guys that made it, they all have different personalities and temperaments, but the common thread is that tennis is their first and biggest love, and so they sacrificed almost everything for it.

what does Kyrgios love? far as I can tell, his list goes basketball, video games and milkshakes, with tennis a distant 7th or 8th. just like Tomic, he only plays it to pay the bills. that's why he'll never reach his potential, let alone string together 7 matches to win a slam.

Watch ESPN will start to refer to Shapovalov as North American instead of Canadian to try drum up interest when the bottom half of the draw plays. It's too bad we don't have a healthy Milos he could have went far this year. Now there are really only 3 players who can win the US Open (and they all play in the top half of the draw) 4 if you include Shap which is still a huge long shot.
