Haha. I knew what you meant. I was just taking advantage of the way you worded it, randy quaids craziness and the fact that he did add some character to the movie.

I've added a spoiler warning to the title, seeing as a number of us have now seen the movie and want to talk about it.
I don't think they actually said he was dead in the first one. He looked dead, and even if somebody had thought he was dead, being in a coma explains a fair bit.
My concern is this. They wanted Earth's molten core, and apparently in 1996 one of the spaceships had landed and begun drilling. So why in 1996 did they go around destroying cities? And why wait hours to begin the attack? They had shields capable of deflecting any weapons we had; including nukes. Just start drilling, and we will be gone once the core starts being sucked out of the planet. The opening scene showed a planet they had already done this to; torn apart and no atmosphere.

It was very....OK. Nothing special, which is too bad after 20 years of anticipation essentially. Action was good. CGI was well done. But the characters were so...meh. I felt absolutely nothing for them. Even the recurring characters. None of them had the soul of the first movie.
I think it was the total lack of relationships between characters that made it so bland. In the old movie you had all these great interactions:
- Goldblum vs. Pullman
- Goldblum and his dad
- Goldblum vs. ex
- Will Smith and his family
- Randy Quaid and his family
- The first lady and Vivica Fox
They did a great job of establishing these relationships. In the new movie, Goldblum had so little interaction with his dad. Pullman and his daughter barely spoke, and nothing was mentioned about their relationship or her mom. The rivalry between Hemsworth and Will Jr. was so forced. Vivica literally said maybe one or two lines on the phone to her son before she bit the dust. Nothing about these characters made me give a damn. I think the only thing that made me feel anything was Pullman's nod to Robert Loggia.
Edit: The nerdy guy and the African dude were actually pretty funny. I liked that duo.

Besides the thrill a minute action in the first one, the personal interactions in the first one were outstanding. Your right Jeff Goldblum and Hirsch had a really good chemistry in the first movie, you almost felt like they were father and son. Even Goldblum and Will Smith was really good. The President and his aide in the first movie was also really well done. I really wonder why they didn't try to bring Mae Whitman back as the presidents daughter, she's a pretty outstanding actress and would have fell into the age group better. I guess they wanted to hot blond instead. Robert Loggia was just the perfect guy in the first movie to play a Marine General and the foil and conscience of the president. They also really could have bought Adam Baldwin back as the main general replacing Loggia and it would have made sense.

^^^ Seems to be a problem with a lot of movies these days. They put the actors looks over chemistry and their ability to act. They replace dialogue with effects. You end up with a much better looking yet far less captivating film.

Fair point. I think it has a lot to do with the desire to make movies more appealing internationally. Sex and CGI sell across all languages and cultures. Chemistry/character development, maybe not so much.

It feels like this movie needed a lot more time for the characters, everything felt so rushed unlike the first. I wonder if there is going to be an extended cut for this film on DVD release.

Entertaining summer popcorn flick, but completely inferior to its predecessor. I certainly agree with the lack of character depth, and I feel the story would have benefited from not going balls to the walls on every single aspect.
Have to admit, though, I like where they're taking the story. However, we may never get to see it if this ends up losing a lot of money.

So briefly is this as bad as the reviews are making it out to be or is it worth seeing if you loved the original one? I want to see it but I don't want to be pissed off and walk out of the theatre.

You know how Terminator 2 completely blew Terminator 1 out of the water? Then how Terminator 3 was really a let down?
This wasn't quite as good as Terminator 3.

The worst movie I have paid to see in a long time. I didn't care about the new characters and the old characters barely did anything, it was all a mess of CGI, and too much time was spent trying to set up a cinematic universe. I was also expecting far more city destruction than the one scene of Singapore crashing into London.
The only redeeming feature was a few cheesy one liners which caused a bit of a laugh. A couple of my favourites:
"They like to get the landmarks"
"I'm not saving the world... I'm saving you"

This was a horrible movie. Much worse than I thought it was going to be. It may have used every sci-fi movie cliche there is. Goldblum was the only redeeming thing in this and he mailed his performance in. Just so bad.
