Further to @TSNRyanRishaug McDavid mention, hearing deal will be around $13.25M for 8 yrs. Big win for EDM to get that term, as opposed to 5

If true... Surprised he gave up 4 UFA years to live in that dump. But glad the cap hit is so high. Should make life difficult for the oilers for the first 3 or 4 years while they are still saddled with the lucic and russell contracts.

If I am an Oilers fan I would be stoked to get the 8 years. As a Flames fan I am glad they are not getting any years of a discount.

McDavid, Draisaitl, Lucic, Russell will command north of $30M of the cap

So McDavid AAV is the same as Monahan and Gaudreau combined...

Whoa, that's going to make it tough for Edmonton to field a competitive team moving forward.
I think the difference between Edmonton and Pittsburgh/Chicago, teams which Edmonton fans seem to compare themselves to regularly, will be their ability to develop cheap young talent to plug into roster holes. Edmonton doesn't have a great history for picking talent outside of the 1st round or so, and they don't seem to be able to develop the players they've picked.

That contract could kill that team. He's a great player, but it really makes it tough to be competitive in signing guys down the road. They will be handcuffed for years if the cap doesn't climb. Chicago has had to trade away so many good players because they have 20M tied up in two guys. Edmonton will essentially be in the same boat once Draisaitl signs for 7. If I was an Oil fan, I'd be scared right now.

If they don't draft effectively they'll struggle keep the team competitive beyond the top players.

McDavid was stupid not to go for 5 or 6 years.

Had no reason to give up 8 years.

Although $13.5M is a lot of money and for a guy where speed is a huge part of his game you are always a head shot or knee injury away from leaving a lot of money on the table.

Wow. That is absurd money. I mean, he's skilled and worth the dollars but that's a big cap bit to deal with for 8 years. What is the max a player can sign for btw? In dollars not term.

What minimum type of offer sheet is going to make it really tough to keep Draisaitl?

Montreal better be preparing that

I believe I heard 15M is the current max.

Yup. 20% of the per-team cap, which currently is $15 million.

I see this too and I do not get it at all. Yes, I would agree that a championship model the Oilers are most closely emulating is Pittsburgh's by overloading up front and at the top, but in what way do they remotely resemble the Blackhawks? The Oilers look nothing like the Chicago Stanley Cup teams.

Slightly lower AAV than initial reports but still a hefty contract. They're lucky he signed for 8 though as that gives them 11 prime years of his career. Even when he likely asks for a trade within 2-3 years, he'll return a gigantic haul given he's signed to a long term deal. He could have really screwed them signing only for 5 years (signalling he's out after that) then they'd be trading a rental after 4 years and getting a way smaller return.

I think I read 14. Rising up closer to 15 after july 1 if the nhlpa use the escalator.

It is gonna be tough for them for a while. They have 17 mil in space at this moment so less than 4 left if the mcdavid deal kicked in this year with draisaitl still to sign. Even with it kicking in next year they will have to shed wages then.

Pieces like Maroon Strome and Talbot that are signed short term will be tough to retain. Unless Draisaitl leaves.

Wow.

8 years is good for Edmonton. But that's a lot of coin. This is why the cap system is so fricking awesome... you sign a player like McDavid long term, and it is both great and super challenging at the same time.

Fun time to be a fan!

Crazy. What an age we live in where a player can command 13+ cap hit.

Once again, Edmonton sets the new "bar" for players of his skillset.

Probably worth the money, but man is it going to be tough to build around that. McD sure as hell better be a perennial Hart candidate for that amount of $. Anything less then PPG (heck even getting close to 100 pts) each and every season, and he's going to get ripped for that deal.

They are going to be very top heavy, we are going to have to compete with balance over the lineup. It will be a very interesting rivalry going forward.
