Default Replace cracked MacBook Air screen

So my toddler decided to take a toy to my MBA screen, leaving me with a good sized crack.

Does anyone here have experience with replacing these screens on the cheap? I have seen online some people getting $900 quotes from Apple. For a $1100 computer with a used value of probably less than that, forget it.

Any alternatives?

You could order the display assembly by itself for probably less than half that. Even cheaper if you get just the LCD, but from what I've seen even I probably wouldn't try changing that myself.

Replacing even the whole assembly isn't for the inexperienced:

Might be some people willing to do it for a decent hourly rate.

Or you could sell the thing for parts and buy a new one, someone would probably be willing to buy the unit cracked screen and all in order to do the screen replacement themselves and turn around and sell it.

I just fixed my MacBook Pro that died by taking out the motherboard and reflowing the solder (basically sticking the motherboard in the oven at 350 for 7.5 minutes).. I used to fix laptops for my job, and I still managed to break the connector on the temperature sensor (fortunately a cheap $5 part off ebay), and that MacBook Air one looks just as challenging (though the wire connectors seem more robust).

Ya, that is what I figured. The pro/con of the Air I guess.

I don't think I would try and fix that myself. I have built computers before, but I think that is way too complex/risky for me.

To tell you the truth you are right, probably selling it for parts and getting a new one maybe an option. Really sad, as it runs like a dream, and is less than a year old. Thems the brakes I guess...

Depending on your usage you could just keep it as a 2nd computer too, just hook up an external monitor/keyboard/mouse and it's now a desktop.

I had a laptop (purchased in 2005) that I broke the screen on. It became both a test server and media terminal for me for a short time and then until about a month ago was at my mom's place as her desktop PC.

I would try and sell it, but if you think about it there are a few possibilities to make it useful. Think of it as a thinner, but wider, Mac Mini.

Bump, quick update. I took my MacBook Air into the Apple store today and got quoted $415 to replace the screen.

The guy asked me what happened and I told him my son cracked it by accident.

He then said "Well stuff happens, I'll tell you what, how about we cover this one for you."

$0, and one happy Apple customer!

Apple did this with my battery replacement on my 4 year old laptop as well this summer - battery was out of warranty, had 800 cycles on it, and so it was well and truly worn out. Five minutes later the battery is replaced, at no charge, just a "Apple appreciates your business", and he hands it back to me.

Not as good a story as yours though!

Yep, my brother is getting the fixed one, and I am getting a discounted one on Black Friday (2012 model)

I was going to buy a new one anyways, since my brother was going to take the old broken one and live with it. This is just pure win for us both.

So I would strongly suggest that if something like this happens, make a Genius appointment and get a quote.

Yeah. The Genius Bar is great. Sometimes they go out of their way to help (such as this!)

Why does everyone else get the great service at Apple? Last two times I had terrible service. Maybe I look like a linux guy or something, next time I'll shave before going.

It is all hit or miss with Apple employees. You either get a really nice experience or the ###### fan boy who talks down to you like your an idiot
