They realize that the 744 does in fact have winglets, right? Most major airlines won't be flying around with the 747-200's or -300's anymore.

Edit: Ok...he isn't that "lumbering," but the point stands...

I guess 'beginners guide' wasn't descriptive enough for you.

There are airlines that fly the 747-8... that doesn't have the winglets
But those have the jagged cowling, where the picture doesn't show it.

I think CNN is confusing the 747-800 and -400 series. The new 800 series does not have the usual angled winglet, but instead utilizes the raked wingtip seen in the 777-200LR and 777-300 series. Of course passenger versions of the 800 will always be quite rare, off the top of my head I only believe Korean, Air China, and Lufthansa have them. Cargo versions are more plentiful, and YYC sees them regularly from Cargolux. Worth nothing that the freighter version of the 747 does not have the elongated upper deck, but features the shorter one much more similar to the original 747-100/200.
Also the A380 wingtips are actually referred to as wing fences.

My best memory of working as a ground crew lead at the airport was pushing back a 747. Just massive when your standing right next to it.

Sad this thing got grounded permanently. Hopefully the corrected technology comes back some day.
"The only picture ever taken of Concorde flying at Mach 2 (1,350 mph). Taken in April 1985 by Adrian Meredith, from an RAF Tornado attack fighter, which only rendezvoused with Concorde for 4 minutes over the Irish Sea: The Tornado was rapidly running out of fuel, struggling to keep up with Concorde at Mach 2."

Does anyone know what planes were landing at YYC tonight at around 17:40? I was driving on Stoney Trail towards the airport and I saw three planes that I couldn't identify. They were dark greyish and from the distance that I was at I couldn't notice any identifying marks or logos. I'm assuming they were probably military aircraft.

A block time ("butt in the seat time") of 17 hours and 15 minutes. Funny enough it is actually second in this ranking, with Emirates own Dubai-Panama City flight having a block time of 17 hours and 35 minutes (although the distance flown is shorter at 8588sm).

An update on this post, looks like Qatar Airways plans to steal this title from Emirates. They are planning to operate Doha-Auckland with a 777-200LR daily effective December 3rd. Making it the new longest flight in the world at 9032sm.
Emirates also appears to be pulling the plug on the Dubai-Panama City flight before it even starts.

Sorry if this has been posted already. But does anyone have an idea of when the passenger trials for the new terminal are going to be?
EDIT: Damn it, meant to post this in the 'YYC New Terminal' thread. Wrong tab.

Was watching Flight Radar last night and saw this come into town.
Looking into it's flight history, it seems to make the trip to Calgary quite often.

Anyone know the reason why it's here so much?

Went to Edmonton to see Iron Maiden tonight. Made a stop at the airport to see if I could get a glimps of ED Force One. I was in luck but only had my iPhone.

Such a sweet ride to tour around in, Dickinson got his 747-400 rating so that he could fly it around too.

Curious, just a few weeks ago it had one of its turbines damaged in Chile
How fast can they repair or change a turbine that big, so that the tour does not get disrupted?

Correct, they swapped out the engines on it. I think it was down for two weeks.
Yup, two engines were damaged in the tug incident, both swapped out:

They also flew one out of the U.K. I believe and had it fixed in a very short period of time and I think it was like 4 days not two weeks. I will look for the article and post a link.
Bruce also got his quals for the 757 for the somewhere back in time tour. Flight 666 by By Sam Dunn was awesome.
Edit: you were closer it was 10 days
