Sounds like a solid pick at this stage of the game. High IQ, lots of upside, with size being the only real risk (and it's not like he's 5'7).
I much prefer these types of picks in the 2nd than the goalies.

Like the hockey IQ. Wish the Flames would take some guys with size that have hockey IQ.

I think it's also time for the Burke haters to at least admit (cause let's not pretend the guy has no say) that despite his preference for big and "truculent" players, the man clearly doesn't let that cloud his judgement and force his hand at all, he's clearly open to taking smaller players if it's the right call.

Burke didn't even leave the Fan960 interview for the picks. He just said they knew what they're doing. I don't actually know what Burke does besides improperly wearing ties.

Basically the intermediate between hockey operations and the owners. Burke's wealth of experience, contacts, and knowledge is probably pretty darn helpful for a management group that averages just out of their 40's.

really nice pick here imo... from the sounds of it, size was the only thing that was keeping this kid from the 1st round... but undersized D are now possilbe in this league, esp if you can skate and have a high hockey IQ

Exactly this.
And initially, he immediately restored legitimacy to the franchise - which had taken a pretty big hit leading to his arrival.

Screw Barrie and Shattenkirk.
Kid truly reminds me of a Right Handed T.J. Brodie.

IMO you cannot draft and develop enough D-men. Even if our roster spots are full, the return for D-men in trades is lucrative. A 4-5 D-men like Russel gets a great return. Rienhart, wasn't even a NHL player and was worth a 1st rounder. The Flames just need to wait for pinch points like draft day, or the trade deadline and receive over payment for their players. I am happy with this pick.

We got the best small dman this draft. Like taking risks on smaller guys outside the first.
