Nothing against Canyon personally but I hate how the Flames always go back to Western/Country themes.
It's played out and not really fully representative of the current, modern city.

Heritage and history are great things.

How come we only yell "C!!" during the American anthem, but not in the Canadian one? We "C" the rise....
1. Because it's in the middle of a sentence, so harder to emphasize
2. It's a little disrespectful, so most people would not be willing to have fun with our own national anthem. Plus we're too busy singing.
3. What Enoch said. It would have been just perfect if there was an "of" in between "see" and "red" in the Star Spangled Banner.

One of the things I find to be the most backwoods and provincial is to complain about something being backwoods and provincial.
When I was a teenager I disliked the cowboy stuff in Calgary, and made fun of it. But as I got older I realized just how fun all that stuff can be, so now I fully embrace it.
I actually think that Canyon has become better with time. To me, it seemed he was putting in too much of a 'fake twang' to it. Now he still sounds like a country singer, but much more natural. I think he sounds a lot better. I went from highly disliking him to actually liking him well now.
Also, I don't mind the cowboy thing. Why is it something that people feel the need to cringe about? Cowboy culture is rather cool, especially for Europeans (and probably other continents as well). No, it doesn't mean you are a small, backwards hick town where you absolutely must date at least 2 of your cousins during your lifetime. Calgary has that history, and they have it in a setting with the mountain backdrop, with large swaths of prairie, and large dangerous animals roaming around. What's not to like about it? Calgary is a modern and vibrant city, so it isn't like all the buildings are cowboy hats and boots. Just enjoy it.

Skip on Stampede festivities next July if you feel that way.
