36-years old, 6-million cap hits - convenient to retire and help the team out of cap jail...

...but having an eye injury sucks, it will affect him for life...

Ah, I had wiped the video of this injury occuring from my mind, it was pretty ick inducing.

Really unfortunate outcome for Boychuk. I hope he has a good retirement and is able to get most of the use of his eye back.

Looks like he may not be officially retiring. Could be LTIRetirement which makes more sense financially for him.

Arthur Staple @StapeAthletic
#Isles release says Boychuk's career is over, not that he's retiring. Will try to get some clarification but assume this means he's going to be on IR, either long-term or regular, until his contract runs out after 2021-22.

It is very convenient for the Isles, but I don't really think this one should be chalked up to convenience. Go watch the video of the incident.

Can we stop worrying about teams cap issues when players experience career ending injuries. Holy fata, who cares? Can’t even imagine that thought landing in my mind.

I don't think LTIR is fishy at all in this case. Boychuk obviously had a gnarly injury and also the Islanders wouldn't face any penalties if he just straight up retired AFAIK. My conclusion is that this is a player with a career-ending eye injury and he is not retiring because he's still owed a lot of money.

Who really cares about 35+ players retiring on eastern US based teams?

The Islanders are in cap hell and this gets them out of it.

Do you prefer a thread with 10-20 replies all saying some form of “too bad for Boychuk” “hope he is okay in the future”

I don’t care about the Islanders at all but I know this helps them sign their superstar. Very unfortunate for a guy who was a good player in his prime but this news definitely helps solve their cap problems which was very significant

I was at this game, it was dead quiet when the injury happened. I would love to see the scar on his face but never saw any photos.
Wishing him luck, seems like a good time to bow out with the labour situation.

I agree when the career ending injuries are legit such as this one. Bogus ones like the Hossa thing where his condition became unbearable exactly the moment his base salary drops from $7.9 million to $1 million absolutely deserve to be scrutinized IMO.

A suspicious allergy to a puck in the eye. Somethings not right here.

When an injury like this happens, yeah kinda. My butthole puckered when I read the title as the clip replayed in my mind. Really wasn’t expecting to see all cap talk off the top. But I’m also an amazing individual and that’s the whole point I’m making.

The only thing fishy about this is he played 3 games in the Bubble after the injury occurred.

https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/...jury-set-skate

In the end though it might still be his decision to retire just due to the circumstances, and framing it this way allows him to still get the money owed to him by being on LTIR.

I don't think that's fishy, it gave him some games to assess the issue and he realized he couldn't see well enough to keep playing competitively.

The eye is still good but the scarring has closed it up a fair bit I can see it being an issue on the ice.

How dare you logically assess the situation and think of plausible and likely scenarios. People need to go on witch hunts for absolutely no reason!

It is convenient though. Just another reminder about how the NHL allows some teams off the hook with loopholes, and others not.

Tell that to Johnny, I'm sure he'd find this less than convinient.
