Leave the kid alone. Let him develop. We'll see what we have in a couple years.

Seems to me like he’s improving his defensive play, but he’s still got room to grow in that area. He’s a great stickhandler and skater, got a bit of size at 6’1”, and can be really feisty. I like this kid.

That's not how it works. Thought this line of thinking would have died with Kylington finally.
still huge question marks around the defensive side of his game. Does he tilt the ice enough that it doesnt matter? hm.

The thing is, he might be like the next Kylington, but in a good way. I think he is a high risk/high reward type of player that might take a few years of pro to really know what he can be.
And to be clear, I was utterly wrong about Kylington.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

pretty funny how quickly the meaning of "the next Kylington" has changed. A good lesson to remember when it comes to prospects like Valimaki too.
as for Poirier, I'm really curious how he handles the transition to the AHL next season.

Often with these, all-offense defensemen is that they are also quite small, and it's pretty easy to conclude that they are never going to be able to take their game to the NHL.
Poirier is 6'1", 190 lbs (a little bit bigger than Kylington). So there isn't a size issue here, it's just a matter of learning how to be a more complete player.
Lots of reason for excitement here.

They've done a pretty good job down in Stockton when it comes to blueliners.

What do you mean "that's not how it works"? There are players (not many) that convert to forward. For sure you could develop him like Kylington.....but i think we all are assuming that is the likely path. If that weren't to work though is why I said...worst case scenario, we try him at forward. The guy seems like he has solid upside. I just didn't want to write all the preamble that we all already know.

Who was the last player drafted as a defenseman by an NHL team to play his professional career (and not for purposes of getting an extra forward/defenseman into the lineup)?
The thing is, while it has happened, it is so rare, and it has been so long since a player made the transition successfully that I don't think it can be considered a viable option. There is a good reason why it doesn't happen anymore.
