Except in Dube's case, it came in the last two weeks of the season, after the Flames clinched. Very similar to Colborne's big year.

People are clamouring for Tre to sign Sonny Milano, who had 14 goals and 34 points in 66 games, but are scared of bringing in Crouse-who had 20 goals and 34 points in 65 games.
Milano is 26, Crouse is 25.

In both cases, neither team had much to play for.

No, not really. Team completely out of it has nothing to play for vs one still playing good intense hockey. Not fighting for jobs with zero pressure against still keeping the energy and emotion, battling for position going into the playoffs. Dube scored two goals vs Nashville, a game Darryl Sutter described as having "a lot of emotion and energy". While 1000 game veteran Milan Lucic said it was a top five game he's been a part of.
The situations are nothing alike.

I’d actually say that Dubes abysmal first part of the year skewed his numbers down. His play at the end reflected more what he is capable of and has demonstrated in the past. The question is if he can find the consistency to become an every day difference maker, much like Crouse.

I always thought dube was robbed of some grade-A chances, it finally caught up to him in the past portion of the year.

Milano is 26, Crouse is 25.

Milano is a free asset though. Crowse presumably would cost something. Personally, I would rather save the assets and use them on something more significant. Trading for Crowse would probably have future opportunity costs.

Colborne was like a gentle giant. Dube at least plays with some intensity.

which leaves Kylington and Hanifin. I think we need to see more of OK to make a determination there, but I think an early extension could be in the cards.
I think they need to make up their mind on Hanifin sooner than later. The best argument for Hanifin is that most D-men in the league are worse than him...but I'm not sure he's that hard to replace (albeit at a downgrade) via UFA - I think I'm okay with a Leddy/Chiarot/Kulak type for $4-5M instead of Hanifin at 6.5-7.5M, assuming he'd even want to extend here.
Hanifin also seems likely to have the best trade value.
Hanifin+
for
Mercer+Ryan Graves (seems like a poor man's Hanifin?)
Not sure what the + would have to be...probably Zary?
|
I would be over the moon for this. Mercer is an amazing piece, it would probably take at least Zary with Hanifin, but I would do that in a second. Pretty sure Jersey isn稚 going to part with Mercer though.

Has to be a top 6 c. Backlund cannot drive a second line. We have players who can play on the wing in our top 9. But need that top 6 c.
Can Bring in another top 6 rw but unless you upgrade 2C, who drives the play on that line? Not many wingers (who would be available at a reasonable cost) can do that. Available Cs like Toews, Miller, Wheeler, kadri, stastny have done so (Henrique or schmaltz can too but unsure of their availability).

He absolutely can and has for many years.

Agree with Scorp. A perfect scenario would be to bring in a young cost controlled asset who has center potential and play him as 3rd line center or 2nd line RW with the intent he would push Backlund down to 3C. Hence why I really like anything around Mercer.

I still think Kadri finds his way to the Flames.
Nothing more than a gut feeling, but we値l see.

I have thought this as well. The Huberdeau extension really makes that go to a winner reality makes the Flames an attractive option for him

If they are going to add a center to the mix I feel like Monahan is the contract they should try and move. If they are looking to get a winger then Lucic’s money feels like the better option to get rid of. Without Kadri it would seem Monahan has a pretty clear spot as the number 3 C but with Kadri it forced Monahan to the wing or the 4th line.
If they can snag a top line RW then it makes more sense to dump Lucic as this would push others down the lineup.
