Flames UPD: Swedish UFA LW Joakim Nygard has chosen the Edmonton Oilers

per Dreger on insider trading.
https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/insider...uffalo~1647174

mentions Ottawa and Calgary are in on hard trying to sign him. GMs are flying out to watch him.

Being compared to Carl Hagelin and he can flat out fly.

Since he is 26 years old he has to sign a 1 year ELC.

stats:
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe.../joakim-nygard

Flames may have an advantage as he plays for Loob's old team Farjestad while Loob was president.

26-year-old Joakim Nygård might very well do just that. His blazing speed makes him one of, if not the fastest player in the league. He has been a steady contributor for Färjestad the past few years and is defensively dependable which makes him bottom-six material for an NHL team looking to add depth.

“His speed makes him a threat offensively, but I also feel he can do other things for you as well, like kill penalties and be a good forechecker”, Rikard Grönorg said as he made Nygård one of his players for Beijer Hockey Games earlier this week.

Nygård had offers from NHL teams last year, but chose to stay in Sweden.

Joakim Nygard sounds like the perfect line-mate for Mikael Backlund.
Quote:
Nygard is under contract with Farjestad BK for the next three years, but an agreement between the NHL and SHL means Nygard could head to North America if he does accept a deal. Nygard is one of the fastest skaters in the SHL and has been a recurring member of Farjestad’s special teams unit. Scouts like Nygard’s defensive instincts and his speed allows him to get back to deal with trouble in his own zone while creating opportunities at the other end of the ice.

Sounds like a really useful player, hope we can sign him. Backlund and Raz can hopefully help sell him on the idea.

We have strong contingent of Swedes now, that has to help.

Backlund, Lindholm, Andersson, Fantenberg, Kylington

I totally forgot about Lindy and Fantenberg I wonder how much that kind of thing plays into the decision of the average free agent. I'm sure it doesn't hurt our chances.

What would Ottawa have for Swedes? Alfredsson folk lore?

Current Swedes: Lindberg, Paajarvi, Nilsson

More importantly they can basically guarantee a top 6 role I'd imagine.

A bit unreasonable to believe this guy could replace Frolik on the 3M line. This is a player who likely would be fighting for a 4th line spot.

Indeed. Frolik may indeed be gone when his contract expires, but through a ton of adversity -- injuries, and getting scratched multiple times -- he's quietly put up a very nice season. He might be the most underappreciated member of the team; the grit, effort, desire and experience is still there. Frolik takes no nights off. To think a rookie steps into his shoes and not a beat is missed seems pretty wishful thinking.

Isn't Nygård the name of that guy who sold clothes at Sears?

On a 1 year deal its probably a smart idea. More ice time should get you better numbers and then you have a lot more leverage talking to all other teams the following season.
