The architect put forth the concept of putting it underground, but the cost was more than the City was willing to stomach.
Also, these design are conceptual. They can definitely change, the contract was just awarded to take this station and intersection further past these concepts. Keep that in mind, too.

Most downtown buildings weren't flooded to that level. A lot of the ones that were never recovered.
I just don't see underground stations in the works. They've already lost a bunch of Green Line funding (carbon tax) so they are going to have to scrimp.

On a related note.. have they finalized the new Convention Centre design, or are we still working with the Conceptuals?

The convention centre team was only determined about six weeks ago, and just publicly announced today (visit the CMLC's website). There is no final design yet, it is way too early in the process.

Earlier today, they announced the final team that will lead the project: https://www.calgarymlc.ca/news-full/...ntre-expansion
Stantec, Populous, and S2 Architecture will form the design team.

That's actually kind of disappointing. I hope those lowrises are spec renders because they don't look good. That whole piece of land until the curved road should be public space imo.

And the following quote "Civitas is currently finishing the master plan and urban design guidelines, and beginning work on the marketing package."

The final built projects won't look exactly like that. This is just a master plan that determines the urban design of the area. The MP identifies zoning, transit and transportation design, building heights based on shadow studies, etc. These are all factors that could influence the building designs, but it isn't a 'guiding light' so to speak; the buildings and structures will be designed independently.

Those are some nice upgrades to the bus barns - they almost look like apartment buildings!
Seeing as how there's no current plan to build a replacement bus storage and maintenance facility, this is still a pipe dream.

Amazing how they basically managed to delete the CPR tracks...
Like the riverwalk concept - the biggest question is what happens directly east of the new arena, south of 12 Ave. Stampede has a couple of new/renovated buildings for youth arts programs, but the rest of the space seems to be a big question mark.
Ideally, it could be a better version of Olympic Plaza/Eau Clair as a year round public gathering space. The sun exposure would make it far more pleasant in the winter.

Don't worry, it will take 50+ years to reach that kind of build out and the designs of each building will be significantly worse than they are shown here.
