You have some terrible wells you should have never drilled if prop taxes and surface rentals are killing economics!

Yeah, it isn't property taxes, rentals or even greedy suppliers that make it tough in Alberta (although none of those things help). The Western Canada Sedimentary Basin is a mature field, far, far from markets, with little viable egress to those markets.
New technology will help (oil sands and shale recovery, tight oil and gas plays), but there are some fundamental issues at play which make Alberta less than desirable when compared to a Marcellus gas play or even a North Dakota Bakken play.

Oil and gold most definitely don't like the hawkish fomc minutes released at 1230 today. Strange day for oil in general...increased inventory at 830...by a lot...price goes up...then the big dive after minutes are released. I wonder if this is the price in for a June rate hike.

It just proves oil is trading on USD more than anything, coupled with non-fundamental supported sentiment trades... All bearish signs for crude.

The NEB has just approved Trans Mountain, as far as I can tell from the live video.

That comment section below the CBC article, though. Yikes.

Well this should make things interesting.

Quote:
Alberta Chief Justice Neil Wittmann has ruled to put lenders ahead of clean-up costs when energy companies go bankrupt.

The Redwater Energy case is one that the energy sector, international investors, bankers, lawyers and regulators were all watching closely.

Redwater was a tiny oil and gas company that went into insolvency in the spring of 2015. It owned a stake in 16 producing oil and natural gas wells, as well as nearly 70 more inactive wells. It owed its bank, ATB Financial, a little more than $5 million.

Redwater's bankruptcy trustee, Grant Thornton, wanted the ability to sell the producing wells in order to pay back debt.

However, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) argued that any proceeds from asset sales needed to go first to clean up the mess — namely those 70 non-operational wells, that have not been subject to the costly decommissioning process.

The judge ruled Wednesday that secured creditors, such as banks, have priority over environmental concerns.
We did some work for Grant Thorten on behalf of Redwater Energy a while back, suffice to say it was cash up front.

What, were you expecting rational commentary from the BC fruit loop industry?

I was run out of a TMEP geotech site by protestors in Burnaby a couple of years ago. Twerpy little runts, but they had the filthiest mouths!

Glad to see that I won in the end.

This seems backwards to me.

Why should the alberta government be on the hook for these wells that need to be decommissioned? they weren't the ones that extended the credit. This cost is just externalized onto the taxpayer when it should be accounted for in the risk analysis of the creditors.

Doesn't seem right to force the state to eat that cost.

Orphan wells and clean up should be front of the line.

The Orphan Well association would be on the hook which is industry funded.

If anything this will make the responsible producers upset and could force some changes.

The OWA runs out of the AER. It's going to be at least partially, and likely majority, subsidized with Public funding.

As someone who does a lot business with the OWA you couldn't be more wrong.

I'll let you go to their website and educate yourself.

No, certainly not. They represent a special, yet highly talented demographic of keyboard facerollers.

I generally avoid the comments section as it is inevitably a train wreck, but I just couldn't look away.
