I remember reading somewhere that hockey Canada has made the decision not to select players that do not have a current club team and are actively playing.
Assuming I didn't just make this up, Iginla better find somewhere to play if he intends to get on team Canada (ie Europe)

Would be nice to see Iggy donning the maple leaf. I'd watch the Olympics for that.
Flames buyout Mason Raymond should also be there.

The Karjala Cup is an international men’s hockey tournament held annually in Finland and Hockey Canada is expected to send an invitation to Jarome Iginla.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported the news Saturday during the Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada.
There will be no NHL participation at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, so the Canadian roster will have a much different look than it did when they won gold in 2014.
|
Sounds like this is Iginla's opportunity to show what he has for the Olympic Squad.

Must be mis-remembering.
Would love to see him play, hopefully he has some opportunities to get some action in before a tournament.

So if he plays in the Olympics, then decides to sign somewhere in the NHL, does he have to go through waivers? Didn't something like this happen to Nabokov when he signed with Detroit and got claimed by NYI?

If he doesn't play professionally elsewhere this season, I don't believe he'll require waivers.
Nabokov had played games in the KHL that season prior to signing with Detroit.
When Cujo signed with the Flames, he didn't require waivers because he hadn't played anywhere else that season (other than the Spengler Cup).

You mispronounced it. It is Nabokov.

The only way Janko is making the team is if there is an injury to one of the top 9 guys or one of them is traded.
|
That last sentence is ridiculous.... if that were true then he would be waiting forever... they are not going to trade a top 9 forward and it would have to be a season ending injury to make it worthwhile .

You don't think someone could get injured allowing Janko to play 10 games or so or you don't believe that if that were to happen that he would be good enough to force them to keep him on the roster??
Do you see Ferland as a top 9 player? I could really see him getting traded at some point if he doesn't become the player that got him where he is. He's trying to be too fancy IMO and that's not what the team needs at this point.
You make it sound like the only way someone makes the team is from game 1 or nothing.

I hope he goes to the Olympics...I highly doubt a contender wants him after not playing all season. Nobody really wanted him last year

Friedman says he is starting to hear Sam Reinhart's name on the rumor mill (starts around the 4:40 mark):

I remember wanting Reinhart in his draft year. I wonder how much value he has and the cost to acquire?

Brouwer + Kulak for Reinhart...but it has to happen now to make sense?

They better be retaining 50% of Reinhart's salary at that cost... HAS to happen now...this won't make sense tomorrow

The obvious counter to that is Moulson and Antipin for Bennett
