Settling out of court is one thing, but I think if they settle this through the justice system, now you have a set a precedent for these types of incidents and that's probably the last thing a fast-paced, full-contact league wants.

Well best of luck to him. Hard way to go out of the NHL, so hopefully he just moves on and enjoys the rest of his life in whatever way it comes.

Maybe this helps keep him skating for a position on the Olympic team?

I don't think the Olympic team is that hard up for players. Maybe if the KHL blocks theirs players and the CHL doesn't allow junior players to be released. If that occurs then I can see him still not being selected for the team.

some news:
CTV - Chris EppVerified account
@CTVchrisepp
1) I was in court today, covering the #nhl and #flames application to toss the 10+ million dollar lawsuit filed by linesman Don Henderson against Dennis Wideman. Here are main takeaways plus 1 surprise:
CTV - Chris EppVerified account
@CTVchrisepp
2) Essentially, the Flames and NHL say this is an internal matter. It should be dealt with by league through arbitration, not by courts. But Henderson lawyer says when you talk about alleged assault and battery, courts need to be involved
CTV - Chris EppVerified account
@CTVchrisepp
3) Henderson lawyer also says officials aren’t explicitly told arbitration is only way for conflicts to be resolved. NHL says constitution/leagues rules are obvious and accessible to everyone

Finally, there is this quote:
“Mr Wideman would like to resume his NHL career and he thinks this matter is preventing that. He would like this resolved as quickly as possible. “
Dominic Venturo, Wideman’s lawyer
(Wideman is currently coaching in Kitchener)

Then offer Henderson a significant portion of future playing salary; like around 50%. In exchange Henderson releases a statement praising Wideman for stepping up to make good out of this unfortunate incident. (Using a term like that to not asses blame, but short of calling it some kind of accident.)
Wideman gets to play and still bring home a seven figure salary. Henderson receives compensation.

So Henderson would get 50% of $0?

Wideman is most likely using the "want to continue playing" as a future chip in court.
"This event and cloud over Wideman has prevented a team from signing him. He missed out on 2 years @ 2.5m..." Hendersos 10.25 minus Widemans lost 5

If there is an agreement that would tell the officiating community to disregard the Wideman effect, somebody might be willing to sign him.

I wonder what the majority of NHL officials think about this? do they hope Henderson wins?
does Henderson winning establish some kind of benchmark?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Oilers were a team kicking the tires. The thought of reuniting him and Russell likely crossed their minds when they got the news of Sekera's long term injury.
