No, we really don't. The guy is a PP specialist, and needs to be sheltered 5 on 5. If we spend big money on D, Alzner is a far better fit.

He would be redundant on the Flames roster as they need more of a defensive defenseman that can play 20 minutes a game.

Preferably a defensive defenseman who can play 20 minutes per game and is a right shot.

Elliott/Gillies.
Edit: should clarify that this is the tandem I expect.
I don't know Grubauer/Korpisalo/Darling well enough to make an educated opinion as to one over the others.
Fleury and Bishop are a hard no from me.

Quite surprised by the views expressed on here. The flames have struggled goalie wise for a while now, I consider it to be almost the most important position on the team. You are going know where as a team without a good goalkeeper; the team will soon lose interest if poor goals are going in every game a bit like last year. Confidence in your goalkeeper is absolutely key. Spend what you have to get that good keeper.

No Elliott
No Johnson
No Bishop
Gillies as backup
Proven starter on short(er) term
Fleury's contract fits the bill. Not sure he does.

The issue is keepers are unpredictable. If you fork out 6 x 6 for Bishop and he plays like he did this past season, you're screwed and stuck with a massive cap commitment.

I heard Ondřej Pavelec is an UFA. Why not try him?

Because when it's game time he turns into a bag of garbage with goalie pads on.

You know who was worse last season and a year older to boot? Cory Schneider and there's a thread about trading 1st round picks for him.

I dont get the Bishop love. Seems like a lot of risk unless he signes for two years.
Maybe I am wrong, but the goaltending moves that seem to work lately are a) promoting from with in b) trading for a young or cheap backup on the upswing like Martin Jones, Talbot, Anderson. If he wants to target Raanta or Soros or Darling and pair them with Gilles/Rittich, I am all for that. Id rather keep swinging for someone cheap and hope they work out or one of your draft picks plays out, then get tied up in a deal with Ben Bishop that puts you in cap hell.

Been advocating for Flames to get Darling for over a year. Watched him play a lot of games for the Hawks and he has #1 potential.

In my dream world, the Flames are able to pry Matt Murray away from the Pens. I would be ok with a Murray/Johnson tandem.
The only way I would want Elliot back is in a 1a-1b scenario. Elliot only seems to play well when he knows that the "other guy" can take away his job

Hopefully Brad can kill two birds with one stone and get us a goalie and a top 6 forward in the same deal, Matt Duchene and Calvin Pickard or Taylor Hall and Cory Schnieder in the same deal

Why is everyone on the Cory schenieder bandwagon? If I strap pads on can I play too? The guy had a stellar season in Vancouver and everyone is all over him. Reminds me of the Denver Backup when Peyton Manning got hurt, the Texans signed him to some over the top contract thinking he was the savior and he would up cropping the bed and after one season he is no longer there.
I'd rather keep elliot and make a move for another big defenseman and hopefully elliot becomes more comfortable here and plays well.
Getting Cory Schneider just decreases my chance of ST renewal.

Worst. Analogy. Ever
Schneider has played 330 games, and been the clear #1 goalie for 4 years now.
This last season he sucked, but here are his GAA and SV% the previous 6
2.23 - .929
1.96 - .937
2.11 - .927
1.97 - .921
2.26 - .925
2.15- .924

#1 Goaltender
|
I'm honestly not sure what goaltender we will end up going with because the higher ups seem to be all over the place and have made a lot of poor scouting decisions. I honestly don't want this team to continue down the path of acquiring failed starters who have lost their jobs due to inability or poor performance.
There's a reason why those guys lost their net to another guy. We need to try and find our Cam Talbot, or Sergei Brobovsky, or Cory Schneider. All the good goaltenders today seem to be either drafted or were up comers that showed a lot of potential.

I get that he plays for a good team but Grubauer has pretty dece stats and is young, looks like a prime example of a guy ready to get his own net. Plus unlike Colorado with Picksrd Washington already has a young stud goalie so he could be had for a reasonable price.

It won't matter which goalie we bring in, we need a new goalie coach, need to upgrade the core(this core is not getting it done and is too soft), we need to upgrade the D. It kind of sucks now, with the way everything is going now.

Playing behind a powerhouse Canucks team and a Devils team at or near the top of the league for fewest shots against most seasons. Does anyone believe for a minute that those numbers would translate to the Flames? I don't and his salary is locked in until 2022 which could do a lot of damage to the team's salary cap structure especially if the team locks up Backlund as cap space is getting tighter. Would suck in 2020 not to be able to sign Brodie because the backup goaltender is making $6 million as I would hope by then Gillies or Parsons would be the starting goaltender.
