Hathaway is exactly what the Calgary Flames need more of.
Disappointing news indeed.

Calgary needs another goalie signed, and another top 6 winger.
That’s exactly what they need.
And some cap space.
Complimentary 4th line wingers signed to 4 year deals is the exact opposite of what they need.

Realizing Treliving might be able to find a similar replacement between now and October, the Flames present roster is now weaker than last year without him. There isn’t anyone currently on the roster or the farm who is capable of filling his role as well as he did. If the Flames cap situation means they couldn’t afford what Washington paid, then they’re unlikely to get a replacement player as good as or better than he was last year. Too bad we can’t clone Bennett.

Good luck to him. Sucks to see him go, this roster needed more of his style not less.

I get why thats more than what the Flames would offer, but I am with the crowd who feels we might really miss him, for several seasons.

Brian MacLellan (ex Flames player/1989 Stanley Cup team), current Washington Capitals GM, builder of the team that won the Stanley Cup a year or so ago, obviously thinks that Garnet Hathaway was worth paying a bit more for than the average 4th liner.

So because he built a Stanley Cup winner that means every decision he makes from here on in is the right one?
Here's my view on it
- We don't know what the Flames offered.
- We don't know if Garnet wanted to go east
- I suspect the lack of clarity of remaining budget after signing Tkachuk, made it difficult for the Flames to step up beyond a certain point. And that's a sound decision. You have to prioritize things
- I give him a lot of credit for carving out a valuable role. But it was just one year.
- I think 1.5M is perfectly reasonable for a player of his type. If he under-performs the consequences are so minor it doesn't matter

Conroy on the radio right now, and it sounds like they consider this to be a notable loss.
They're looking to size and physicality on the wings, and that can be hard to find.

I really hate appeals to authority. Anyone can make a bad decision.

Quite frankly, the Flames need the bottom 6 space to develop players.
Hathaway was a solid worker, but he always seemed like the king of Vanilla. He threw a lot of hits, according to the stats, but rarely were these ever big or impactful hits. He was willing to fight, but also lost a lot of those fights. I doubt that any opposing team member was ever worried about Hathaway's physical presence.
I'd rather see our bottom line filled with guys like Mangiapane, Ryan, Dube, or even Czarnik. I just feel like those guys bring a lot more energy to their game and/or have much more room for improvement.
As much as I respected his style of play, it was bad for the development of players like Bennett and Jankowski. There was never really any desire to set up plays. It was very reminiscent of the 2005-2015 Flames grind it out style of play.
I wish the best for Hathaway. He always put in a solid effort, and it's good to see him get a multi-year deal and some security. However, he was in no way a difference maker. I can see why the Flames would be unwilling to match a 4 year deal.

It takes more than top players to make a winning team.

Hey you’re right. That’s weird because I looked it up before... can’t tell if I misread it or got shotty info. Likely the former.
Either way. Good for 2nd on the team. Which is why I mentioned it.
Yeah the legend of Sam Bennett, I’m making points about how he can fill the 4th line hitting role well... what a legend.
