interesting that Calgary always seems to be the first or second choice for American businesses looking to expand in Canada. you never hear of Vancouver or eastern cities outside of Toronto getting first crack, wonder why that is

Huh? Lowe's is a home improvement store not a sporting goods store.

Totally! If it's anything like Rona or Home Depot, you can use it to hunt down the elusive employees that apparently work there.

And a Home Hardware, and a UFA. Lowes is going to do just fine, but someone's gonna lose out of this.

Actually Lowes is opening in Ottawa next week so Calgary won't be Lowes second choice in Canada.

Rona. They have been preparing for Lowes entrance for the last few years opening new stores and trying to strengthen their dealer network in smaller markets. We'll see how it works out for them.

Rona mostly sucks, so I think they'll take a hit.

So, let me get this straight, they build a new shopping mall in the SW, called Aspen Landing, and they don't put a Lowe's there?

Weak.

I deal with Lowe's in Phoenix when we are down there. I like it, but it isn't much different than Home Depot.

It's gotta be a disposable income (lots of it) & demographic (mostly working middle-agers, few retirees) thing. Calgary is the most shopping focused city I've ever spent time in. It has a ridiculous plethora of options for anything you want to buy, and must have the largest big box store / capita ratio of anywhere.

Shopping is frustrating here in Brisbane, I'm impatiently waiting for Costco to open next year, in a city nearly twice the size of Calgary. Every time I visit Calgary I load up on stuff.

Bingo! I find these big box DIY stores to be pretty much a commodity, and I'm more about who's close than who it is. More importantly, it's about where I know stuff is so I can get in and get out quickly.

For me it's the HD on 16th Ave. Yeah, it's a smaller "express" store and doesn't have the full selection of a full sized store, but 80% of the time it has what I need. I also know it inside and out and know exactly what aisle to go to. I find service is on par with ever other DIY retailer - go at a slow time and you'll be fending off staff. Go when it's busy and they're MIA.

Would I go to a Lowes? Only if:

1) a good deal is to be had
2) can't find it at my HD.

Rona is sure to lose in this battle - there's no way they can match the purchasing power of Lowes and HD. Note to self: buy 2015 put options on Rona....

Actually I do, having lived eight year in Calgary. Which I am sure is longer than your adult life.
