If Treliving could redeem himself in my eyes in a single move... and make some CPers heads simultaneously explode.
Good for a laugh, anyway.

I think if he wanted a fresh start and was committed to changing his image I'd accept him with open arms. Who doesn't want/need a fresh start/second chance?

I think this is the problem with the Flames. Too many "gentlemanly hockey player" types and not enough angry, hate-to-lose, will go out there and kill a guy types. The Calgary Flames are currently the hockey equivalent of vanilla ice cream.

If you can get the player cheap enough and Lucic handing him his ass when he gets out of line doesn't work you can press-box him. The player doesn't need to achieve some kind of moral redemption, instead just learn to keep their fringe opinions to themselves.

But this guy isn't one of those guys, he is a tool.

I don't disagree with taking a chance on a guy with a past if he can make a big impact and at least mostly not embarrass the organization.
Parade him in front of the cameras talking about how grateful he is for this opportunity at a second chance. The problem is that this guy isn't going to do that. If he behaves at all, the thin veneer holding it together will fade and he will make a fool of himself and the team.
So maybe you press box him, what good is that when he's all over social media slugging it out with your fans? You can take him out of the US, but he wont stop talking US politics, or Q talking points, which means as an organization you are going to need to start constantly making statements about how your organization doesn't feel the same way as him about <targeted group> and that you value all your fans that are members of that group.
Are you going to sign a guy who's last numbers aren't great, to maybe screw up your team chemistry, and definitely aggrieve your fans, and who maybe is going to be cap sitting in the press box with the added cost of full time escorts to keep him from making a fool of himself? I don't see any reason to take that risk.

You are right, I was mistakenly thinking of unconditional waivers for contract termination. Or what NJD did with Gusev. This is a normal buyout and the window ends on July 27th based on what I can see on CapFriendly.

Good post, and by no means am I disagreeing about the risk of taking on a bad character. But to be given as many chances as he was before finally being waived, to me, is telling of the player's abilities. I'd hope that there would be at least a modicum of personal growth after effing up being a young millionaire in the most famous city in the world.
Are there rules about buying out a player mid-season on a 1-year deal?
