A casualty of a flat cap. Flyers need to shed salary just to sign the RFAs (Sanheim, Hart).
He looked better in the 2nd half of the season and was put back in to top 4. If you have the cap space, he's still a very useful player.
Some great memories, and a great nickname to boot.

In a side note, Seattle valued fringe 4th line RFA Twarynski more than a 2nd and a 7th.
First overt sign that Francis is doing a bad job.

I think Francis valued the cap space more but we'll see what he does with it.

So much for the theory of some that thought Francis screwed up not taking Ghost, so he could be flipped for value.

I think most NHL GMs are wrong about him. The contract is only slightly inflated, but he still has value and upside, and Arizona made a good trade. Many here thought Seattle would just take him for free!
Seattle taking Twarynski is still bottling.
Here's hoping Cam York can step up and take Ghost's place on the PP.

Coyotes acquire Gostibehere, 2022 2nd and 7th from Flyers

That’s not correct. They valued at Twarynski more than a 2nd, a 7th and Ghost.
Ghost was offered around the league and no one wanted him. The Arizona deal was the best they could do.
Everyone knows that Ghost offers some decent offence, but is a huge black hole defensively.

Wow they really wanted this guy gone. He had a good first few years but i thought he was over rated and not very good defensively.

I think you really need to say that all GM's are wrong about him, as he was offered to everyone, and Arizona was the team who thought his value was the highest, which was negative 2nd and 7th round picks.
I think many on this board are just slow to realize how valuable cap actually is. It always has been, it's just doubly so now it seems.
I also think Edmonton hasn't figured it our yet. While I'm one of those that think that Duncan Keith is likely better than his analytic stats, it's hard to believe the different between Keith's and Ghost's value is a 2nd, 3rd and 7th round picks (plus more than a $1M in cap).

Gostibehere with a second attached was a great move for Arizona, and would have been much smarter for Edmonton than Keith.

Twarynski + $4.5M vs Gostibehere + 2nd + 7th
That's crazy from Seattle. You eat 1.5M of Ghostisbhere's salary cap and I bet you could get at least a 2nd. Nobody wanted to pay for him at $4.5M, but somebody probably gives you an okay return at $3.0M.
Just horrible management of the assets available to them by Seattle.

Dude. No lol. The Flyers traded a 2nd and a 7th to get rid of Gostisbehere. They didn't get a 2nd and 7th for him. Seattle would have been better off not taking a player at all, or even giving up picks like a 3rd rounder, than taking Gostisbehere.
You can have a chocolate bar with a value of 2 dollars or a debt of 100 dollars, which do you take?
If the argument is that they could have taken Gostisbehere and received a 2nd and 7th, well so could ever team in the league as evident by this trade and would have no bearing on them selecting Twarynski.

So, you are saying that by paying $1.5M you get a 2nd round pick, and by paying nothing Arizona got a 2nd round pick.
So, the value of retaining $1.5M in cap is at least 2 2nd round picks?
I don't think so.
It's possible that if Philly retained $1.5M they could have gotten rid of him for free.

Maybe Philly could have but the whole point of Philly wanting to get rid of him is that they needed to open up cap space and wanted to do it right now.
Philly wasn’t going to be willing to retain.
Maybe Arizona needs to hold on to him until the trade deadline but I think they will be able to flip him for a positive asset if they retain in the next 12 months.

Does Philly have what it takes to acquire Eichel? Getting rid of Gostisbehere to create some salary space for Eichel?

Getting cap space to sign their RFA's more likely.
Hart and Sanheim this year, Frost and Farabee next. Still need another goalie, a bottom pairing defense and a spare body or two with 13M in cap space.
But with Couturier and Giroux UFA's next off-season and Voracek asking for a trade, this team could go full Richards/Carter retool again.
