This news takes away the sting of losing Giordano yesterday.
I think he's a better than average player, but I honestly can't believe they're thinking of signing him to that sort of term. That length of contract should only be used for franchise players, not secondary players that have many, many comparables throughout the league. 4-5 years maximum for a player like this.

Ken Holland is a freaking god.
- trades for 38 year old Duncan Keith without salary retention
- loses his best defensive defenseman after Seattle outbid them by 100k per year
- re-signs a 39 year old goalie to a two-year deal
- gives Zach Hyman a 7/8 year contract
we are not worthy.

Is 8X5 going to be the new 6X6?
I don't know much about Zach Hyman and thought he was a 23 year old who has some prime years left. He's 29!?! Bwahah. E=NG!

Holland is in full panic mode. Agents probably start salivating when his number comes up on the call display.

Toronto should get the draft pick if it is a done deal anyway.

If it's rumoured to be approximately 7x5.7, I can't see him adding an 8th year for free. My guess is it's going to be 8x5.5m or 7x6m

Holland must think Hyman is his new Kris Draper.

7x6 would be the new Lucic, without the face punching.

I’m not sure he is in panic mode. I see a gm that doesn’t give a crap what goes on with Oilers 3-4 years down the road . This signing will be some other gms problem. He’s trying to win the cup now. Granted I don’t think he is going about it the right way.

Thoughts, Prayers and congratulations to the Hyman family.
Just....wash the money before you touch it.

The guy is worth 8x8 for sure!
As long as it's on a different team.

Help, save, whatever.

Hyman is going to look pretty awesome on McDavids line hunting pucks down. The thing is there's no way he lasts 8 years. Even over the course of the regular season he always is so banged up by the time playoffs comes around he loses his effectiveness. He goes 100% every single shift.
They probably just use him for 4 years and then put him on LTIR for the final 4.

the fact that there were apparently several teams willing to give Hyman 6 years or more is just mind-blowing to me. Like, did Hymans camp just take the piss at the beginning and say "give us 8 years lol", and then couldn't believe their luck when GMs actually agreed? It's insane. I still think 9 out of 10 teams would be better off in the long run if they hid their GM's phones during the first days of free agency.

Holland isn't going to be around for 8 more years, so maybe he figures it's not really his problem. His goal is to make McDavid happy. Maybe this helps.
