Japan has a very low vaccination rate and are being hit hard by the delta variant (including Tokyo). Bubble or not, I don't blame any athlete for taking a pass on the Tokyo Olympics.

He's 40 in a month, injuries and recovery aren't getting any easier. Sad that he might not get to go out on his own terms, but it feels like it's time.

Throwback to Federer's potentially last slam win; the 2018 Australian Open, and it was a weird tournament. First off Djokovic was seeded #14 and lost to Hyeon Chung in the 4th round.

Some people say Hyeon sold his soul to win that match, never to be heard from again. Hyeon would actually make it all the way to the semis, before retiring to Federer down big in the 2nd set. 3 of the 8 quarterfinalists were unranked and Nadal had to pull out while playing Cilic in the quarters because of injury. Unfortunately this is an all too common occurrence for Nadal in Australia.

Dennis Shapovalov was making his Australian Open debut against an up and coming Greek player named Stefanos Tsitsipas. Shapo would take the match in 3. Both players have improved so much these last 3 years, this could very well be a slam final soon.

Federer was seeded #2 and cruising taking out Struff in the 2nd round, Gasquet in round 3 and recent Wimbledon quarterfinalist Fucsovics in round 4. The final was a different story, where he would face Cilic in a Slam final for the 2nd time. 6 months earlier he defeated Cilic at Wimbledon, where the lasting image of the match was Cilic crying on the sidelines because he has injured. It was hard to watch then and even harder to watch now knowing Cilic never got back to a Wimbledon final. This match was much closer with Federer closing it out in 5 sets. The match had some controversy as they decided to close the roof due to heat. Cilic would blame his slow start on the roof closure saying he practised all day outdoors and wasn't prepared for an indoor final. After the match Cilic would rise to world #3.

What are your lasting memories of this historic tournament?

Hyeon Chung is a name I had totally forgotten about, but at that time his game was described as a sort of Djokovic-lite i.e. relentless baseline retrieval. if I remember correctly his injury was some of the nastiest tennis blisters ever caught on camera, like his foot was flayed House Bolton style.

come to think of it, I recall Cilic having serious blister problems and being in tears during the Wimbledon final the previous year. so that's how Roger started winning late majors again, he was sabotaging opponents clothing and equipment with abrasive powders.

Chung has back problems, kind of like Pospisil did. Both got to about top 30 but are being held back.

Didn't Chung also wreck his ankle pretty horribly back in 2018?

Cheung is currently ranked #183 but has a career high of #19 thanks to that run in Australia. I last saw him play in 2019 against Rafa in the third round of the US Open. Honestly he looked pretty solid, it's too bad injuries ruined him. Who knows maybe he can get hot again and make a run in Australia or New York he's only 25.

I'm hoping all 3 come but I have serious doubts any of the big 3 come to Canada.
