Screws, heat tape/ foil tape, and brush on duct sealant. Find your airloss and seal that up.

Most airloss will occur on the joint between the furnace and transition plenum attaching the 2 .

Eliminate any ceiling intakes in basement if there are any as they are imbalancing your entire house.

If you want good performance you also need to think about your current furnace as well.

Older furnaces being asked to push air thru a coil will struggle and underperform lime crazy and heighten the risk of freezing coils .

Just something to think about. I personally refuse to install new air conditioning over anything over 5 years old as the furnace just won't cut it long term and anyone installing against this just wants your $$$$ and doesn't care at all about you as a customer.

Make damn sure the vents ducts and furnace get cleaned, inspected and tuned up prior .

We should probably have you come by again and take a look. The furnace is as old as the house - around 25 years old. It is probably on it’s last legs. Basement is all finished though. There is a bulkhead that runs across the house though.

I asked the questions about heat pumps in the a/c thread, but is there any that work in Calgary? It sounded like it might not be viable.

Certainly NOT. Air conditioners do not provide heating, but heat pumps do. ... A heat pump can heat and cool, but an air conditioner cannot, which is the primary difference between the two HVAC systems. An air conditioner is typically paired with a furnace to provide heat during the cold months.

Oh yeah, I just meant if we are in the market for a new furnace and also wouldn’t mind getting a/c, would a heat pump let us kill two birds with one stone? But would Calgary winters be too much?

No. Not at all . There's so much more too it. Unless we are talking about Geo thermal heat pumps alone are not typically installed in Canada especially with our climates .
Hope this helps?

We had Keith check out our furnace back in May and he was amazing!

As first time home owners he was able to give us lots of tips about what to look for and how to make things run more efficiently.

He was timely, knowledgeable and the hockey talk was absolutely top notch.

10/10 would recommend.

Keith do you do quotes on furnaces for home purchases? Not in the market to buy at the moment but if we do the first thing I'd like to know about is the HVAC

Yes. But if asking as a negotiation tool that's not how it would work.

I assume your just wanting an idea of what the overall health of the furnace is and what lifespan may be left .

I do FREE pre occupancy, pre purchase inspections for anyone that wants this done so they are well informed on the condition of thr most expensive appliance In any home.

Hope this helps?

That helps. Thanks. And also a dumb question - is there anything you can do to an AC system to reduce smoke particles within the home?

Air conditioning installs are now fully booked for the year .

In all honesty I've ever in my 30 years I've never seen it so bad for acquiring equipment .

The companies we are quoting against are also lying about the seer ratings .

Unless it has a txv valve the seer ratings are 2 to 4 points lower than people are being told and so 20 to 35% less efficient than customers are being told.

Also ....price gouging as a result of finding good equipment is horrendous since COVID-19 started .

The worst culprits.....Lennox, Goodman , Daiken, York.

Buyers beware.

Hey Keith, would you be the same person to take a look at the humidifier along with a regular maintenance check/clean up before winter?

We purchased a new place in May and the property inspection brought up that the humidifier didn’t seem to be working, they were convinced it’s an issue with the water supply but it’s beyond my skills to check it myself.

Also....there's a high probability that that humidifier is installed incorrectly as well.
More than 75% of Flo through humidifiers are installed on thr wrongnside and need to be moved.

If looking for furnace replacement NOW is the time to start planning.

Garage heaters as well. We do radiant and forced air.
All other services such as inspection, tuneup, cleanings should be booked soon as well to beat the rush.
