Boys will be boys, right?

What about girls? She has no say or rights? Just supposed to 'get over it'? What if she was your daughter? What if this happened to your mom? What if this happened to your wife?

How do you think she feels having had this picture thrust into her public life? All her friends, family, professors, future boyfriends, possible future children. This picture may come to haunt her at any time.

To me, it was kind of disgusting that Montreal selected him. What disgusts me more? Not a mention of her, or helping her, or reaching out to her. It was all about him.

There is no procedure for that.

The league has no power to prevent a team from drafting whomever it chooses. It can rule after the fact that the player was ineligible, but it has no control over what name the GM calls out.

Hell, the Flames once drafted a nonexistent player, with no consequences except that they wasted a pick.

Nhl really showing off its fossils lately. This is almost nothing compared to the black hawks fiasco and yet it's still a sign of the obvious moral rot permeating the league.

PR nightmare for the Habs.

Lets hope they get in front of it and work with all parties for counselling and reconciliation.

Toe curl of a pick and classic Montreal. I would have given the kid his wish and chance to do what HE felt he hadn’t earned yet. Quite obnoxious of the Habs to overlook all that.

I don’t recall the Flames doing this. What’s the story?

I don't understand it at all. Even if they really like the player and person, they guaranteed that this story would blow up and define him for years by making him their first round pick.

This seems like the worst way to do it for the victim (who watched a team apparently not give a crap about her), the player (who asked teams not to draft him while he goes through a process to rehabilitate his character), the franchise (which has shattered the illusion that they prioritize character or anything really over hockey ability), and the league (already reeling from the Blackhawks fiasco).

Really, remarkably bad judgement. There were no other players in that range that were close enough in talent to at least let this guy slide into Day 2 of the draft where it would be a way smaller story? Crazy to me.

That’s who I was thinking of too.
I’m just wondering if this was theme of the day “bitch about the flames even if they didn’t do it”, or if I forgot something.

Bergevin’s record is piling up here a little bit.

-Director of player personnel during the situation in Chicago
-Hired Sean Burke who has a history of domestic violence issues
-Rumoured to have tried to acquire Slava Voynov (Rumors were NHL may have stepped in)
-Rumoured to be a team that’s reached out to Anthony DeAngelo’s camp
-Used a first round pick to draft Mailloux

The focus of the story should maybe be Bergevin more than anything at this point.

I’m a big believer in second chances, but that second chance has to come down the road and not right now.

The kid knows he screwed up. He acknowledged it and the first step of that was not getting the honour of being drafted.

If he were to show honest remorse and put in a serious effort to make amends over the course of the year then by all means draft him next year.

There is absolutely no reason he should have been drafted this year. What a complete lapse in judgement.

Exactly. The guy is a sociopath. You can't have that many coincidences without raising an eyebrow. The win at any cost attitude seems to be along the lines of, as long as it works for me, I don't care what you do. Anyway, I have strong feelings about athletes as a whole - certainly the Canadian media portrays these guys as smartly dressed saintly family guys, but some of these guys are dirtbags in their private life. I wouldn't want a professional hockey player marrying my sister, that's for sure.

NSFW!
Is that the one where Tom Cruise has the little pony tail?

Montreal has this guy live on Twitter right now. And he starts by reading off a script

The fact that the guy himself didn’t want to be drafted yet the Habs still drafted him is ridiculous

"Didn't want to be drafted" might be a reach at this point. Announcing his withdrawal was likely a PR move that was suggested to him as a means to save face. He was prepared with the script and had a blank space reserved for the team that drafted him.
