Maybe Arizona needs to hold on to him until the trade deadline but I think they will be able to flip him for a positive asset if they retain in the next 12 months.

They need to hold him for a year and a half.

Dom L of the Athletic shows that Gostisbehere's fair market value would be 2 x 4.2M; his current contract is 2 x 4.5M.

Flyer's were in a pinch for cap space, but Ghost is still a useful player. NHL GMs are whack.

Yeah, because NHL GMs have proven to be infallible.

They have seldom proven to be infallibly wrong. Given an intelligent thing to do, the chances are pretty darn good that at least one of the 32 will step up and do it.

As long as it isn't a new idea, that is. The general run of GMs don't like new ideas, aren't good at thinking of them, and don't want to try them if they do. But trading for a rover isn't a new idea, so here we are.

I'd probably take Philly06cup and Supermatt18 over at least half the GMs in the league.

I've thought for a while that becoming an NHL GM is more about who you know than what you know.

On the whole, I don't think very many of them know what they're doing. For example, Joe Sakic, a man who ended his playing career by putting his hand into a snowblower while it was on, is one of the top executives in the league.

Funny that Sakic and Yzerman, HOF level leaders and elite captains who each spent entire 20 year careers within a single organization and led their teams to multiple cups, are top executives and an ECHL grinder turns out to be the grinder equivalent of a GM

Wonder if these guys are good at assessing talent and coaching, and building a good room, from seeing so many teammates and coaches and know what it takes to win

Every NHL GM disagreed with that assessment. The Athletic does not set FMV, which can change quickly based on supply and demand. There was no demand for the Ghost's services.

Plus the Atheltic has ignored the increasing value of cap space.

After the OEL trade and Ristolainen trade: some NHL GMs confirmed idiots.

Like Ron Francis. And Bobby Clarke. And Newy. And Phil Esposito, Rob Blake, Ron Hextall, Dale Tallon, Brett Hull Ken Dryden, Bob Gainey, Serge Savard, . And Mike Milbury (well, the US HOF).

Point being, a lot of elite players have been pretty bad GMs too. I think Sakic and Yzerman just happen to be good at it.
