i had some time last week to finally build myself a little spray booth. now, this thing is built for function only (it's not that pretty - ha! ha!) and sits in my shop. when i'm doing jerseys or hoodies that get twill applique i need to spray a temporary adhesive on the back of the material so it stays in place while being stitched down to the garment.

just a basic box. there is a vent in the back and i added a light inside to make it easier to see. the bottom of the plastic front is held in place with wood strips and in each strip are some magnets. the split in the plastic is so i can stick my hand in the box and spray with minimal adhesive getting out.

the black piece i put the twill on is just a thin piece of plastic (1/8" ish) and i drilled a ton of holes in it - it helps with the over spray getting sucked up and it makes it easier to get the twill off the sticky plastic.

out the back of the box is a 3" dryer hose that connects to another box under my work table. inside that box is a bunch of staggered egg cartons and then a furnace filter before the fan (just trying to get as much adhesive out of the air before going thru the fan).

so far it seems to work great - no complaints at all! i will likely paint the spray box the same colour as my shop walls when i next have paint out.

Honestly it was just 2 pine 2x10s stained with dark walnut varathane and sealed with clear coat. Nothing crazy fancy or intricate but it turned out pretty awesome

My latest project is done, and it was a doozy. I give you...La Fin du Monde, or The Edge of the World!!! This idea had been percolating in my brain for a long, long time, but the execution was a little tricky. It was broken down into multiple stages before the final form: ship, cliff, sea surface, clouds/mist and waterfall were all builds unto themselves before coalescing into what you see here.

I used a LOT of new techniques on this, so it was a huge learning project. The ship is a 1:450 scale Spanish gallon I'd built years ago (taken apart, re-painted and re-assembled for this project). The cliff is florists foam carved up and shaped. The water surface is Styrofoam and foil, while the waterfalls are a combination of cut-up bottles, craft water and silicon caulking (the basement reeks of it). The cloud/mist is cotton with airbrushed highlights, with mini LEDs underneath. This is somewhere in the neighbourhood of 60 hours of work, and I'm not 100% sure it's really done (got some touch-ups to do). Close enough for photos, though.

I've included some WIP pictures here, which demonstrated the depth of it. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. Now I can get back to animation.

Enjoy

Been meaning to make this for years. I had a bit of wood leftover from the vanity, and got some more maple from Timber Town to make the door, so they match with the vanity. I ordered a piece of non reflective picture frame glass from Chinook Glass, and put a few photos in that are easy to change out(these phone pics don't do them justice!). Was an interesting project making the door with grooves and stepped edges to secure the glass, and tongue and groove corner joints with my crappy table saw. The extra bathroom storage will be welcome.

Sure wish my Japanese detail saws would show up from Lee Valley that my wife ordered for Christmas...would have been handy.

My other little project is in the staining stage, will post a pic when done.

I had bought this piece of art in Egypt back in 2000. The frame was one of my first ever builds(with a mitter box, saw and screwdriver being my only tools), and it's pretty manky, but it worked OK. Finally got around to doing this a bit nicer. Used aspen from Timber Town, stained natural. Toughest part was getting the slot at the top, as I wanted to have enough structure on the sides to keep it strong. It's just squeezed between 2 pieces of glass.

It now hangs over the stairs to the basement.

I made my son a Hot Wheels Race Track once time for his birthday. I made 2 round cakes, cut the side of each of them a bit, so they formed an "8" shape. Then I iced it and used a fork to make race tracks. Then I put hot wheels cars on it.

Well, this one's been a long time coming, but I can finally show it off. My latest - The USS Constitution!

I bought this kit at a meet in the fall of 2019 and started working on that Christmas, but it fell by the wayside for some other projects. I started back on it in April, and finished her off this morning. She was pretty much a box full of wood lath, string and some manufactured parts when I bought it. I'm guessing there's 130 hours of work put into it, with most of it going into the rigging - every knot was tied by hand, including the ratlines. All the deadeyes and blocks were threaded by hand as well. About 90% of the wood was cut by hand as well. And the stand was hand-made as well, courtesy of some good tips from our own Surferguy.

This kit was a total challenge from anything I'd ever built before, and I'm incredibly proud of it. It's not the best job I've ever done or the best kit I've ever built (everything was translated from Italian, and a lot of instructions were very vague), but I can honestly say it's the most fun I've ever had building a model! I'll definitely build a wood ship again.

I took a ton of Work In Progress photos, but only included the final product in here. Enjoy.

(here there be LARGE photos!)
