I remember watching the televised event from both Wembley and JFK stadium in Philly. Organized by Bob Geldoff and Midge Ure in response to the famine in Ethiopia. It was an awesome spectacle that was attended by about 160,000 people in both stadiums. 1.9 billion people watched on TV around the world.

Ah yes, Phil Collins hopping on the Concorde to play both venues. To raise awareness of famine in Africa.
The snark is lighthearted, 15 year old me thought this was the most amazing thing ever. A week of negotiation was undertaken to secure unfettered access to the home VCR and cable to tape the entire thing onto a set of Beta tapes that I hung on to until about five years ago. The last Beta machine I had would have been gone more like 20 years ago.
I often wonder about the long term effects of Band Aid.
Is there less famine in Africa or the World?
Spoilered for being a total bummer.
Spoiler!
"The Ethiopian dictator, Mengistu, until then deadlocked in the war, was using the money the west gave him to buy sophisticated weapons from the Russians, and was now able to efficiently and viciously crush the opposition. Ethiopia, then the third poorest country in the world, suddenly had the largest, best equipped army on the African continent."
I like to think Live Aid and "do they know it's christmas time?" is where Bono learned that you could leverage western guilt into huge sums of money with little to no oversight, allowing him to get richer than everyone in Pink Floyd combined.

was a teenager, and randomly found myself on that day in a pub (this was lunchtime/mid day) in England watching the spectacle. just outside of London as I recall- so close yet so far
I did buy an awesome Live Aid Tshirt that my daughter now wears (which the internet just told me I could try and sell for 275 pounds) and a poster that is rolled up in my garage somewhere though
