Flames Flames sign Gillies (2 yrs, 1st year 2 way, 2nd year 1 way, $750k AAV at NHL level)

Renaud Lavoie @renlavoietva
Jon Gillies signed a 2 year deal with the @NHLFlames at $750 000. First season is a two way deal. 2nd is a one way.

Curious if that first year salary is only in the NHL or either NHL/AHL.

Hopefully Gillies can make some improvements over this contract and turn into an everyday NHLer.

This tells me that they view Gillies in a little higher regard than they do Rittich and that's not a slight at Rittich at all.

Gillies will be the starter in Stockton this year while Parsons should get around 20 starts down there; Rittich will back up Smith for the year and come the off-season next year ~ depending on how things shake down I could see us parting ways with Rittich and re-upping Smith for maybe 1 more year to graduate Gillies into a starting NHL position.

Only in the NHL. That's what a two-way contract is. He'll make less in the AHL this season (but probably more than he made last season).

If he spends time in the AHL in 2019-20, he'll make the same as if he was in the NHL (actually a little more because there's no escrow withholding in the AHL).

Ortio got a similar deal a few years back. Hopefully it works out better this time.

Can Gillies sign an extension in the second year of the deal?

He'll be able to sign an extension as of July 1 next year.

Thought so.

Was playing out some scenarios. If he turns into a real deal NHL starting goaltender and seeks commensurate compensation, I guess that's a good problem to have.

Seems like they hold Gillies in higher regard than Rittich possibly. Unless that year 2 is in hope Gillies/Rittich are both sharing the NHL net while smith is gone.

?

Strange conclusion to draw without knowing where Rittich's deal falls.

During the second year, he'll be waiver eligible. Giving him a 1 way for that season will minimize the chance of him getting claimed if he does need to go back to the AHL then.

However, hopefully he's in the NHL full time and this won't be an issue.

It's nice to see they have faith in one of their goalies.
I really want one of them to be the real deal.

There's no better situation for a young goalie then to be behind a talented but rickety old one who can't be asked to play more than 45 games before the playoffs.

Jon Gillies needs to see a ton of rubber at the NHL level so we can find out if he's legit. I've liked some of the things I've seen, I want to see him take the next step.

Everything I just said can also be applied to Rittich. I'm glad we're not devoting a ton of resources to bringing in an outside back up

Gillies is going to be great and I predict we’ll see him in Calgary full time before too much time passes.

Glad we have good depth in net.

I've said before, the optimist in me says he proves himself this year or the next to be legitimate, the more game time he sees. I still see Rittich as a good number two but think Gillies more likely to become a number one.

It really doesn't show much faith. Not saying they don't have faith in him, but they could easily send him to the AHL the following season if he sucks.
