Default 2017 World Baseball Classic - Clásico Mundial de Béisbol

It has begun, Israel upset South Korea in Seoul. 2-1 in extras.

Love the little league pitching limits

Quote:
Team Israel starter Jason Marquis and reliever Josh Zeid each went three scoreless innings to lift their country to a win in its World Baseball Classic debut, upsetting Pool A host nation Korea, 2-1, in 10 innings. And what makes the victory even sweeter is that both right-handers hurled fewer than 50 pitches, meaning Marquis and Zeid can return on Wednesday, if Israel chooses to do so.
Canada opens Pool C play on Thursday at Marlins Park against defending champions Dominican Rep.

While I enjoy the idea of a the WBC, I still wonder about the timing for it. Just seems like they rush guys in the spring to get ready for this, and you wonder how "all out" some guys are because they don't want to mess up their seasons with an early injury.

Personally, I'd like to see it a bit like how hockey used to do it. Have a world championship during the playoffs, so every team that is knocked out can send plays. With so few teams actually making the post-season I think you'd still see a high level of play and guys would be less worried about injuries with the offseason coming up.

Never the less, looking forward to seeing how Canada can do, but I enjoy watching Japan (to hope to see them winning) and the US (to hope to see them fail).

Agreed. I always get excited to watch the WBC and see how Canada will stack up but seem to lose interest as the tournament progresses. It does seem like many players (especially the Americans) treat it like an exhibition and it feels like it drags on for too long.

I like the idea of having it during the MLB playoffs but then there would be issues securing stadiums to play in. Baseball is back in the 2020 Olympics though right? MLB should start the season early, scrap the All Star game and take two weeks off for it.

Israel won again, 15-7 over Taiwan
Korea lost again to the Netherlands who are playing all 5 of their star shortstops (Bogaerts, Gregorius, Schoop, Profar and Simmons) at the same time.
Japan beat Cuba 11-6. 3 homers from Matsuda

Israel, Netherlands and Japan are through to Round 2. Cuba and Australia have do-or-die tonight to see who joins them.

Canada opens at 4pm against Dominican Rep.

Pretty cool to see Israel and the Netherlands move on. Before the tournament I would have expected an easy first round for South Korea and Taiwan. Pretty big choke job by Korea however when they were hosting.

Go Australia and Canada although neither team really has a chance. Canada also looks to be in the Group of Death. Is there some rule Canada has to play in the same group as the USA every time?

And hes wanted to play for Canada for years as a tribute to his mom, who passed when he was 10 from Melanoma.

Israel won again, great story.

Dominican leading Colombia.. if that result holds Canada still has a chance.
By my calculations Canada needs to beat the US by at least 2 runs to get into a tiebreaker.

Tiebreaker is fewest runs allowed in games between tied teams. If all 3 teams are tied, the bottom team is out and the other 2 go to a tiebreaker tomorrow.

Colombia 4 runs allowed over 18 innings
USA 2 runs allowed over 9 innings
Canada 4 runs allowed over 9 innings

If Canada wins 2-0 i don't know what happens

Bautista throws out the winning run at the plate saving Dom Rep AND Canada.
Dom Rep. now scores 6 in the top of the 11th.

He ended up scoring the winning run too. That was a heck of bottom of the 9th, even with the implications for Canada I couldn't not cheer the Columbians.

Team Curacao beat Team Law of Return. And people said the World Cup was gimmicky.

What a game by Stroman. No hit PR through 6 innings! Was pulled in the 7th after a lead off double.
