A very interesting comparable!

Because of all the talk that went on until recently (when Bennett’s line started to click) I wonder how many people would call Schenn a bust for taking this long to find a groove as a 5th overall?

I can’t say I’d be upset with Bennett turning in to that kind of player after a few more years.

Bennett

Draft +1: OHL - 2.18 PPG
Draft + 2: NHL - 0.47 PPG
Draft + 3: NHL - 0.32 PPG

Schenn

Draft +1: WHL - 1.67 PPG
Draft + 2: WHL - 2.0 PPG
Draft + 3: NHL - 0.33 PPG

If you would have looked at the players at their draft + 3 seasons you would actually say that Bennett looked more promising at that point.

It's just at the first 20 games of this season where Bennett has lost all confidence and lost his way but probably shows why it may be too early to give up on him yet.

Interesting though is that even in his draft + 4 Schenn only had 8 goals and 26 points in 47 games, so not earth shattering numbers either.

The problem with the comparable is Schenn was tearing up the WHL prior to being traded to the Flyers. And then the trade, in essence, "reset" the expectations for him as he became a shiny new toy.

And with the Flyers it can be argued he improved every year until he became a 60 point player.

I think a lot of people didn't think he lived up to expectations, especially as a center, but it's not like he was following Yakupov's trajectory at any point.

That's a 45 point pace in a regular season and was only behind the big three of Giroux, Voracek and Simmonds. Not earth shattering, but not that bad for a 21 year old either.
