TSN Original: Surface - Paul Kariya Interview
Fantastic player and a fantastic interview. He has always been one of my all time favorite players who never played for the Flames.
Great insight on what he had to go through with his concussions. The Suter cheapshot was when he became a villain in my eyes.

"Off the floor, on the board" has to be one of the most chills-inducing commentator calls I can remember.

He was an absolute fantastic player and was considered one of the NHL good guys for a long time.
Hopefully he can continue to recover from his injuries and enjoy his retirement.
WOW, what a partner though!!!

Really interesting piece, but I strongly disliked the interviewer and his style of questions. Seemed almost passive-aggressive and like he was prodding Kariya about his choices and obvious issues.

He was the face of the league or at the very least, one of the faces when I started watching hockey. Definitely one of the most dynamic and entertaining players of his generation and he absolutely deserves to be in the HHOF for how he changed the landscape of the game. It's too bad he was born in the wrong era because he would have a lengthy and productive career in today's NHL with out all the head hunting.
It's scary how bad the concussions have affected not only his career, but his life. Seems like he's in a good place now and hopefully he can find a way back in to hockey in some capacity now that the league has started to take concussions more seriously.

It was incredible. It's a shame he can't recall one of the greatest moments of his career and in Stanley Cup history because of the concussions he suffered.

Really wish Gary Thorne was calling hockey(in a larger capacity).
I'd take ABC Sports over Sportsnet lol

I remember watching him in BCHL with Penticton Panthers when he was 16. Most dominant junior player including WHL I've ever seen.

Enjoyed watching that but hate the implication that him staying away from hockey now is because of his injuries, and he's bitter or something like that.
He lives on the beach, surfs everyday and has smoking hot partner.
I respect that he's living a different chapter in life and seemingly enjoying it. Knowing what head injuries can do to players, I hope that's the actual case.

Good piece. On one hand of course it'd be cool to have Karyia roll around the NHL still. On the other, the guy lives his life. As he pointed out, people remember him from the Stevens hit, and I think that's about it unless you're a hard core hockey fan.
That guy lost a ton of brain function from that era of hockey, he's paid his dues to live his life the way he sees fit. Good for him.
HoF well deserved though. He was a star without Selanne, was a Superstar tandem together. Its only right they go into the Hall together.

I was always under the impression he stayed away because of his disdain for the game. While i didn't like the interviewers style of questioning, I do appreciate that I'm better educated, and Kariya has stayed away because he's a private person, and because he's a present thinker, not dwelling on the past. What's done is done, and what is will be.
I've made no secrets he's my favorite player, and the reason I started and kept playing hockey growing up. I agree with Shanahan, that hockey would benefit from his involvement. Not only as a straightshooter, but as an ambassador. The countless people he has influenced already in his career, and doing so in the most respectable and humble way. He not only inspired me to play hockey, but he inspired me to also be a kind and respectful human being too. He truly was and probably still would be an amazing role model.
I love the walk in and interview after he walked back into an arena. I'll take it for face value, and view it as his first foray into an arena since, and his interview and smile were absolute gold. I look forward to his official induction, and his speech.

One of my favorite players. Happy to see that he seems at peace.
Stevens has an odd place in hockey history having a large hand in ending two of the eras best players. Not his fault but none the less how we view him as a player has changed, at least in my mind.

Paul Kariya is ripped! Didn't know he was so muscular.
Agreed with the "off the floor, on the board, Paul Kariya" being one of the best calls of all-time.
He was truly a great player. Sometimes people compare Gaudreau to him but to me it's not close right now. Kariya was a much better player.

I know it was a different tomr and the game was different, but even for that time
Stevens was a dirtbag. He hit to injure, no doubt about it. Not sure why he gets the pass he did. He was dirty.

I don’t know of a team other then the 04 Flames I was more crushed to see lose the cup. Hate Stevens and the devils for it. Kariya was the man, one of my all time favs.

I too thought he looked like he could slide right back into the line up.
I was surprised to see that his partner is a 13 or so
