Default Opinions on this drive?

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0097033&catid=

Seems like a hell of a deal for a networkable drive. Anyone have experience with this brand?

Someone in the reviews section mentioned that this requires proprietary software on any PC that wishes to access the file. I wonder if this is true.

Only thing I can see it lacking is a built in FTP site. If I wanted network attached storage, I would want to be able to access it from outside my home otherwise I would go with a far cheaper USB or FireWire drive.

For about $60 more, Memory Express has one that does have FTP built in and it's a Gigabit drive.

The System requirements include the following: Win2000 SP4/XP SP2/Vista

This guarantees there is some garbage software involved. I'd avoid it personally.

That's just the enclosure - it doesn't include the drives. The Gigabit refers to the NIC speed.

Edit: but it does appear to be a very nice enclosure. I like the specs on it.

I have the 320 GB version of that drive, I use it as my time machine backup on my mac... NDAS drives are slower transfer speeds but they work.

Ya I know, sorry, forgot to mention that part. With the price of drives these days, I figured it was a moot point anyways. I also reffered to the drive as gigabit, meant the NIC speed, sorry bout that.

VERY nice enclosure, I would have jumped on this some time ago but don't REALLY have a need for it yet, would just be a fun toy.

Read some reviews on the net and the Comstar appears to
be poorly built. Also the software tends to freeze windows.
I think I would avoid this product.

I'm thinking of getting something on my network to back a few computers up to, but I want it to be able to handle time machine backups from a few different sources. Anyone have any experience with this type of setup? Any product recommendations?
