Default New Monitor, Fatter Pornography

I done went and bought me a fancified widescreen monitor and now everything is stretched out and makes all the pictures and whatnot look wide or "fat". The "smilies" that are right next to the textbox I am typing this message in look like they've gained 20 pounds since I unplugged the old square monitor and plugged in this new one.

I'm sure there is an easy fix for this but I can't figure it out. I'm running Windows XP.

On a related note, Samsung instruction manuals don't do much in the way of instructing.

Well I'll be jiggered. I actually figured it out for myself.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Start -> Control Panel -> Display -> [Setttings] -> your monitor's native resolution.

If it rotates, as in you can grab the monitor frame and rotate it to make it tall (or wide) then you may need to DL manufacturer and/or third party software.

After 3 weeks of perfect service, this monitor is now playing tricks on me.

It goes to the wrong resolution when I leave it alone for a while. I come back, put it on the proper one and it works again. Then I leave for a while and it's back to the wrong resolution. Right now it won't go back to the proper resolution even when I change it.

Any idea what might be causing this? Nothing has changed. I didn't fiddle with anything and it worked just fine yesterday and every day for 3 weeks.

If you have a NVidia video card, I'd check it's control panel settings also and install the Samsung driver, if you haven't.

I don't even know what kind of video card I have.

I'm trying to install the driver but it insists on opening the disc in Firefox and then giving me the old "this only works in Explorer" routine. I can't figure out how to get Explorer to be the default browser.

Come to think of it I watched a downloaded file last night on this computer and it's been fouled up ever since. And no, not smut, a pretty crappy version of "The Big Lebowski".

Not sure what you are describing here. You should be installing the videodriver for your videocard. I have no idea why you are trying to open up drivers in internet explorer. Explorer (not internet explorer) is the program that controls the files on your computer. Internet Explorer and Firefox are ways to view the internet. Totally different.

Hold the windows button on your keyboard (looks like 4 squares) between ctrl and alt in addition to the break button (on the topright of the keyboard). That will bring you the system properties. Goto hardware and device manager. Then under display adapters will be your videocard.

Thanks.

I'm not trying to open up drivers in internet explorer. I put the disc in the machine and it automatically opens up firefox (my default browser) and displays a screen that gives me the option to pick my language, then another one with a "install driver" button. Clicking that gets me a "Auto install for browsers other than IE not supported...".

Then it gives me instructions to do it manually "Go to my computer, click on the disc drive open the file, install bla bla bla." I did all that and it came time to install the file it allegedly installed, but did so instantaneously. Before the sound of me clicking on "ok" reached my ears a screen popped up saying "driver successfully installed". But nothing has changed. It didn't do anything. I'm having a hard time believing it installed anything of substance that fast and it doesn't seem like it did.

It's an Intel82865G Graphics controller, if that means anything.
